Women remain significantly underrepresented in trial leadership roles for interventional structural heart disease (SHD) trials, according to a new study.

Less than 10% of committee seats in interventional SHD trials are held by women, while men make up more than half of committees, said Mayra Guerrero, MD, in the Department of Cardiovascular Medicine at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.

“Women in the US have historically been underrepresented in cardiovascular medicine, particularly in interventional cardiology,” she said. “As a consequence, critical gaps remain, including limited representation of women in leadership roles in cardiovascular clinical trials.”

Guerrero and colleagues sought to address the lack of representation in trial oversight committees, leadership roles, and authorship of critical interventional SHD trials. A co-author of a systematic review and meta-analysis, Guerrero said the goal of the study team was to generate contemporary data on women’s presence in these leadership positions.

The study, published in JACC: Advances, showed that despite growing awareness and clear proposals for improvement, gender disparities in trial leadership remain.

The researchers used data form 88 eligible trials, where 67.8% of the trials had a steering committee and 55.8% reported committee member names. For trials with available committee membership, women held just 7.0% of committee seats, whereas men made up 56.2% of committees.

The Cancer Research UK Clinical Research Funding Scheme supports high-quality, investigator-led cancer research involving patients, tissues, samples, and clinical data. The program is structured around three interconnected modules: Clinical Trial, Experimental Medicine, and Sample Collection, which can be combined into an integrated research proposal.

CRUK particularly encourages biologically rich and innovative clinical studies that maximise what can be learned from every participant. Priority areas include early-phase proof-of-concept trials, treatment optimisation and repurposing, innovative trial methodologies, rare cancers, cancers affecting children and young people, and cancers with substantial unmet need.

Eligibility Criteria

• Applicants must be based at a UK university, medical school, hospital, UKCRC-registered Clinical Trials Unit, or research institution.
• The proposal must be investigator-led; industry-sponsored trials are not eligible.
• Applications ordinarily require a UKCRC-registered Clinical Trials Unit to coordinate the clinical trial or study, or an associated trial/study.
• Researchers at all career stages, from early-career to established investigators, may participate.
• CRUK particularly encourages involvement of early-career researchers approaching or recently completing clinical trial or clinician-scientist fellowships.
• CRUK recommends making contact ideally one month and at least two weeks before the application deadline.
• Module-specific eligibility requirements apply depending on whether the application includes a Clinical Trial, Experimental Medicine, Sample Collection module, or an integrated combination.

A resolution by the Federal Council of Biomedicine expands the scope of biomedical professionals’ work regarding medical cannabis in research, quality control, production, and pharmacovigilance. Check it out!

Science advances, regulations keep pace, and, little by little, new professions are beginning to occupy spaces that once seemed out of reach. Last week, the Federal Council of Biomedicine (CFBM) approved CFBM Resolution No. 427/2026, which regulates the role of biomedical professionals and cannabis at different stages of the medical cannabis supply chain.

The regulation covers areas such as research, cultivation, processing and extraction, laboratory analysis, product development, quality control and assurance, clinical research, and pharmacovigilance.

More than just a bureaucratic change, the resolution places biomedicine, biomedical professionals, and cannabis at the forefront of a growing field accompanied by an ever-increasing demand: technical expertise.

For researcher and biomedical scientist Tereza Raquel Xavier Viana, this new phase represents an opportunity, but it also requires preparation.

“Resolution 427 represents an important step forward for biomedicine, but regulatory support is no substitute for technical competence,” the researcher notes.

This statement helps convey the spirit of the new regulation: authorization to practice does not mark the end of the journey. It ushers in a new phase.

August 18 is World Breast Cancer Research Day — a date chosen to reflect the approximately 1 in 8 women who will develop breast cancer during their lifetime. At Fox Chase Cancer Center, researchers are working to improve not only how breast cancer is treated, but also how treatment affects patients during and after their care.

Breast cancer research can take many forms.

It can mean testing a new medication that may help prevent cancer from returning. It can mean asking whether some patients can safely undergo less extensive surgery and experience fewer long-term side effects. And it can mean studying more than a million patients to better understand how the timing of treatment may affect cancer growth and progression.

Those questions are at the center of three important areas of breast cancer research involving Fox Chase Cancer Center investigators.

The ELEGANT clinical trial, led locally by breast medical oncologist Joyce Habib, MD, is evaluating a different endocrine therapy for patients at higher risk of recurrence.

The NOAX clinical trial, led locally by breast surgical oncologist Austin Williams, MD, MSEd, FACS, is studying whether a more targeted approach to lymph node surgery can reduce long-term side effects.

And a large Fox Chase-led study by breast surgical oncologist Richard J. Bleicher, MD, is providing new information about breast cancer growth, upstaging, and the potential impact of delays between diagnosis and surgery.

Together, the studies demonstrate how research can shape breast cancer care from several directions — finding better treatments, reducing unnecessary treatment burden, and helping physicians make more informed decisions about when care should occur.
