PRIORITY SERVICES

The Brazilian Registry of Clinical Trials (ReBEC) presents the new fast tracks for clinical research and observational studies on INDIGENOUS PEOPLE AND TRADITIONAL COMMUNITIES and on NEGLECTED TROPICAL DISEASES (NTDs). Fast-track can reduce the normal approval period for clinical trials to less than 48 hours, if the documentation, information and any mandatory changes requested are provided by the registrant.

The already existing fast-tracks and the attendance to other studies will not be interrupted. Priority care is granted with a view to accelerating clinical research in epidemiological emergency situations and/or studies with the potential to reduce socioeconomic inequalities, keeping the perspective aligned with the forefront of ethics and transparency, diplomacy in health, scientific collaboration and diversity and specificities of recruitment and health care.

FAST-TRACKS IN OPERATION:

I - Indigenous Peoples, Traditional Communities, Human Migration and Refugee Movements – clinical research and observational studies dedicated to or preferably addressing traditional communities (quilombola, caiçara, faxinalense, among others), Indigenous peoples (within or outside legally demarcated territories), and refugee groups, taking into account the specificities established by regulation, on a case-by-case basis.

II - Neglected Tropical Diseases – Leprosy, Tuberculosis, Leishmaniasis, Schistosomiasis, Scabies, Chagas disease, Intestinal parasitoses, Viral hepatitis, Trachoma, Onchocerciasis, Human rabies transmitted by dogs.

III - National and International Public Health Emergencies – Mpox, Covid-19.

IV - Arboviruses – Zika, Dengue, Chikungunya, Malaria, Yellow fever.

V - WHO Prioritized Pathogens for Latin America – Studies dealing with World Health Organization prioritized pathogens for Latin America, as listed in the document "PATHOGENS PRIORITIZATION - A SCIENTIFIC FRAMEWORK FOR EPIDEMIC AND PANDEMIC RESEARCH PREPAREDNESS" (Health Emergencies Programme, 2024) – Lassa fever, Cholera, Black Death (Plague), Bacillary dysentery or Shigellosis, Salmonella, Pneumonia, Urinary tract infection, MERS-CoV, SARS, Ebola virus (EVE), Marburg virus (MVE), Ebola virus (EVE) Sudan subtype, Hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS), Hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS), Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever, Influenza A H1, Influenza A H2, Influenza A H3, Avian influenza (Influenza A H5N1), Avian influenza (Influenza A H6), Avian influenza H7 (Avian influenza H7), Avian influenza H10 or Avian influenza H10, Nipah disease, Viral hemorrhagic disease, Poliomyelitis, Hand-foot-and-mouth disease, Herpangina, Viral meningitis, Smallpox, Mpox, Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), Venezuelan equine encephalitis (VEE).

VII - Studies on the impacts of climate change, the effects of scientific denialism, and health misinformation -The physical, mental, and social consequences of environmental and climate changes on human populations; The impact of extreme weather events and environmental degradation on infectious, chronic, or emerging diseases; The influence of denialist narratives and misinformation in Health on adherence to preventive measures, vaccination, treatments, and risk behaviors, as well as the physical and mental outcomes for human beings and populations.

The world’s first clinical trial of a sensor that can monitor drug concentrations in a patient in real time has reported back. The small-scale clinical trial used patches that accurately recorded the concentration of the antibiotic vancomycin in the dermal interstitial fluid at five-minute intervals. This technology could soon be helping doctors monitor drug levels in a patient to prevent serious side-effects.

Researchers have developed electronic aptamer sensors for the continuous monitoring of a variety of molecules in body fluids. Aptamers, the DNA equivalent of antibodies, can be produced to specifically recognise any small molecule target. In combination with an electronic readout mechanism for this binding event, this has enabled the laboratory of Kevin Plaxco at the University of California, Santa Barbara to develop a general platform that can be used to detect any small molecule in serum.

Applying the platform to monitor a target molecule continuously in the bloodstream has proven more challenging, however. In 2017, the researchers succeeded in implanting sensors into live rats to monitor levels of the cancer drug doxyrubicin or the antibiotic kanamycin, while the rats moved around normally.1 After multiple other studies with sensors against dozens of different molecules, of which more than a dozen were tested in animal experiments, Plaxco’s team has now moved a step closer to the ultimate goal of using it in personalised medicine for human patients.2 Working with the clinical research group of Sophie Stocker at the University of Sydney, Australia, Plaxco…

The Karmanos Cancer Network and the McLaren Center for Research and Innovation (MCRI) have officially partnered on their first collaborative research study spanning both oncology and non-oncology research sites. The project, Ask Questions About Clinical Trials (ASQ CT), marks a significant milestone in integrating research efforts across McLaren Health Care and reflects a shared commitment to improving patient-centered communication about clinical trials.

Led by Lauren Hamel, Ph.D., MBA, co-leader of the Population Studies Research Program at the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute and associate professor of Oncology at Wayne State University, the ASQ CT study aims to strengthen how providers discuss clinical trials with patients and how patients participate in those conversations. This project is funded by the McLaren Research Foundation.

Why This Study Matters
High-quality communication between patients and providers is a cornerstone of effective care. Research consistently shows that when patients feel informed, heard, and engaged, they experience better outcomes, greater satisfaction, and improved trust in their care team. These communication needs become even more critical when discussing clinical trials, where information is complex and decisions can feel overwhelming.

Despite the importance of clinical trials, enrollment remains low nationwide across the research industry. Many trials across cancer, cardiovascular disease, and other conditions struggle to accrue enough participants to answer essential scientific questions. Poor communication is a known contributor to low enrollment.

The ASQ CT study directly addresses this challenge.
