ReBEC is a joint project of the Ministry of Health (DECIT/MS), the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), and the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (FIOCRUZ). The Executive Committee of ReBEC is composed of the aforementioned institutions and the National Health Surveillance Agency (ANVISA). ReBEC is an important source of information for patients, healthcare professionals, researchers, companies, and research centers. China’s ability to conduct clinical trials quickly and cheaply has given it an edge in the biotech sector – and the US is growing concerned

China’s edge in fast, cost-effective early clinical trials has propelled its emergence as a global biopharmaceutical powerhouse, but there is a risk that the United States could take steps to curb that advantage, according to analysts.

US lawmakers and officials at the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have raised the alarm about American pharmaceutical companies’ growing reliance on conducting early clinical trials in China, flagging the opaqueness of the process and the need to keep medical innovations on shore.

While large multinational corporations’ compliance teams have been “on high alert for quite a while”, the recent ratcheting up of such rhetoric in Washington could prompt firms to “double click a lot more when evaluating China-origin target assets”, said Xianfeng Morgan Xu, a partner at US law firm Foley Hoag based in Washington.

Last week, John Moolenaar, chairman of the House Select Committee on China, called for greater due diligence and oversight of US firms conducting clinical trials in the Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region and at People’s Liberation Army-affiliated hospitals.

Five major drug makers had been cooperating and sharing information with the US Congress regarding its probes into clinical trials at Chinese military hospitals, Moolenaar added.

After a Parkinson’s diagnosis, many people start their journey by learning about treatments to help ensure their best quality of life. But according to experts like Robert Hauser, MD, from the University of South Florida, a Parkinson’s Foundation Center of Excellence, the initial months after a diagnosis also hold a unique window of opportunity that may go unnoticed by people newly diagnosed with Parkinson’s and their care team.

In Episode 108 of the Parkinson’s Foundation podcast Substantial Matters: Life & Science of Parkinson's, Dr. Hauser discusses the "golden year," a time prior to starting Parkinson’s medications. This window may hold a key to finding therapies that could change the course of PD.

What is the “Golden Year”?

The "golden year" refers to the period of about 12 months after diagnosis when a person is more likely to have mild movement symptoms and may not yet need Parkinson’s medications to manage activities of daily life.

Before starting medications to manage Parkinson’s symptoms, the brain is at its natural baseline. People who have not started medications are sometimes called treatment naïve. Being treatment naïve gives researchers a window to test disease-modifying therapies — treatments designed to slow, halt or possibly reverse Parkinson's progression.

Timing Matters

Current Parkinson's medications manage movement symptoms such as stiffness and slowness of movement. However, they do not treat symptoms that may appear after many years, such as cognitive changes or serious balance issues. Ghana is taking steps to strengthen its capacity to conduct and oversee high-quality clinical trials, following an assessment of 15 public and private research and health institutions supported by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the National Vaccine Institute (NVI), with funding support from the European Union-funded Vax & Pharm Initiative.

Clinical trials generate the evidence needed to develop and evaluate vaccines, medicines and other health technologies. Strengthening the institutions that conduct and oversee these studies can help Ghana accelerate health innovation, improve preparedness for health emergencies and expand access to safe and effective health technologies.

The assessment began with a three-day capacity-building workshop that brought together representatives from 15 institutions. Reflecting Ghana's growing and diverse scientific workforce, participants included a strong cohort of women scientists, research leaders and representatives of the private sector. Participants were introduced to the draft WHO Benchmarking Tool for institutional capability for Clinical Trials, designed for institutions to identify strengths and gaps in their ability to plan, conduct and oversee high-quality clinical trials.

The training also brought together a diverse group of researchers and scientific leaders, including strong participation from women scientists and representatives from the private sector.

Black Americans remain underrepresented in medical research, even as studies show they are willing to participate when given the opportunity.

Black Americans remain underrepresented in clinical trials for new drug and medical treatments, and a panel discussion at the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation’s Annual Legislative Conference on Friday explored how to change that.

The session, “Let’s Talk Trials: Why Representation in Clinical Research Matters,” took place at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center. Panelists examined the barriers that keep Black people and other historically underrepresented populations from participating in cutting-edge research, and the actions key stakeholders can take to make clinical research more accessible and inclusive.

Why It Matters

Diseases can impact people differently based on their age, gender, weight, race, ethnicity and other factors. That’s why it’s important for clinical trials to include people from a wide variety of backgrounds. Roughly 1 out of 4 of clinical trial participants are from communities of color, even though those communities make up more than 40% of the U.S. population, according to the pharmaceutical company Merck.

These findings echo other research showing that Black Americans make up nearly 14% of the U.S. population but account for only 8% of clinical trial participants, according to the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine. Representation in clinical trials helps researchers gain a more complete picture of how investigational medicines work across populations.

SERAM warns of the gap between AI in brain cancer research and its actual use in clinical practice and calls for faster and safer pathways.

Dr. Albert Pons Escoda, a neuroradiologist and member of the Artificial Intelligence (AI) Commission of the Spanish Society of Medical Radiology (SERAM), emphasized that the specialty “calls for more streamlined pathways to bring AI from brain cancer research into clinical practice.”

On the occasion of World Cancer Research Day, celebrated this Thursday, September 24, the specialist noted that “there is still a very significant gap between what we are capable of doing in research and what we can actually use in clinical practice,” especially in brain tumors, where this new tool “is one of the fields where radiology is adding the most value to cancer research.”

Pons Escoda explained that AI “allows us to extract a significant amount of quantitative information from images that, until now, was very difficult or too labor-intensive to obtain on a routine basis,” and emphasized that solutions are already available that automate tasks such as lesion segmentation and volumetry, as well as the prediction of certain molecular characteristics of the tumor, prognosis estimation, and assessment of treatment response.
