ReBEC is a joint project of the Ministry of Health (DECIT/MS), the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), and the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (FIOCRUZ). The Executive Committee of ReBEC is composed of the aforementioned institutions and the National Health Surveillance Agency (ANVISA). ReBEC is an important source of information for patients, healthcare professionals, researchers, companies, and research centers. OHSU investigator leads international clinical trial studying potential treatment for nonobstructive hypertrophic cardiomyopathy

People living with a serious heart condition that has few treatments appear to benefit from an interventional drug, according to results of a randomized clinical trial reported today in the New England Journal of Medicine.

The lead investigator from Oregon Health & Science University also reported the results during the European Society of Cardiology Congress 2026 in Munich.

The drug, known as aficamten, was developed by Cytokinetics, a San Francisco Bay Area-based biopharma company, and initially targeted an obstructive form of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, which is a thickening of the heart muscle that’s usually inherited. Today, researchers reported results from a Phase 3 placebo-controlled randomized clinical trial testing the treatment on people with a nonobstructive form of the condition.

For that group of patients, the condition isn’t necessarily deadly with modern management, but it can be debilitating by greatly reducing their ability to exercise or even to walk.

“Based on this trial, this is the first-ever successful therapy for nonobstructive hypertrophic cardiomyopathy,” said lead author Ahmad Masri, M.D., M.S., associate professor of medicine (cardiovascular medicine) in the OHSU School of Medicine. “These results are highly encouraging for patients with this condition and for cardiologists who struggle to help them.”

Artificial intelligence (AI) could significantly reduce the time required for several traditionally labor-intensive steps in clinical trial planning, according to Eron Kelly, CEO of ConcertAI, and Shaalan Beg, MD, chief medical officer, oncology, ConcertAI, who discussed the technology’s potential in a recent video interview with BioPharm International.

Kelly explained that AI reasoning models can rapidly digitize inclusion and exclusion criteria, compare a proposed trial with similar studies listed on ClinicalTrials.gov, and identify relevant trial attributes. Tasks that previously required weeks of manual review could potentially be completed in minutes, he said.

How can AI improve clinical trial design and patient recruitment?
AI can also help sponsors assess whether an appropriate patient population exists within the current standard of care, particularly for second-line therapies. Kelly said these analyses can help sponsors identify potential clinical trial sites based on historical patient populations and ultimately accelerate enrollment and drug development.

Highlighting the MUHC’s unique ability to bridge pediatric and adult cancer care, the trial evaluates a new antibody-drug conjugate for the treatment of osteosarcoma and soft tissue sarcomas in adolescents and adults.

Adolescents and adults with difficult-to-treat sarcomas can now access a new investigational treatment at the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC), through the Phase Ib/II EMBOLD Sarcoma clinical trial. The study brings together the MUHC’s pediatric and adult oncology teams to offer the same trial to patients aged 12 and older, an approach made possible by the MUHC’s unique continuum of cancer care. The trial is locally coordinated by the Research Institute of the MUHC (The Institute).

Sarcoma is a rare cancer that primarily affects adolescents and young adults. Approximately 2,000 new cases are diagnosed each year in Canada and despite advances made in recent decades, treatment options remain limited.

“Clinical trials in sarcoma are particularly valuable. These cancers account for only about one per cent of cancers in adults and encompass many subtypes that affect both adolescents and adults, making participant recruitment and the generation of robust evidence particularly challenging. Modifiable health behaviours account for nearly half of deaths in the United States, with the burden of modifiable chronic disease being especially significant among those aged 60 years or older. Despite the importance of modifying health behaviours to improve health and reduce mortality in older adults, large-scale, stable health behaviour change has been difficult to achieve. Well-designed behavioural interventions are critical to supporting consistent health behaviour change.

The goal of the National Institute of Health’s (NIH) National Institute on Aging (NIA) is to support innovative research that fosters the health and independence of older adults while studying the conditions that uniquely affect the most vulnerable among America’s ageing population. In 2020, the average phase 3 protocol collected approximately 3.56 million data points. By 2025, that figure had reached about 5.96 million, a five-year increase of 67% and 6.4 times the 2012 average of 929,203, according to collaborative research from the nonprofit industry group TransCelerate BioPharma and the Tufts Center for the Study of Drug Development. The study found potential room for greater discipline as nearly one-third of phase 3 procedures and associated data were classified as non-core or non-essential. The peer-reviewed paper also noted that AI and ML processing power “may be serving as a disincentive to reduce data volume.”

Nearly eight months later, that observation about AI looks prescient. “I don’t think [sponsors] are as worried about collecting too much data,” said Venu Mallarapu, chief transformation and AI officer at eClinical Solutions. He argued that AI has made expanding datasets easier to manage and analyze, while sensors and wearables could drive volumes higher still. “Of course, you still want to make sure that you’re collecting the right data,” Mallarapu said. “But crunching that data and generating the insights that would be required, AI has certainly made that a lot easier with the powerful capability of some of the models.”
