PRIORITY SERVICES

The Brazilian Registry of Clinical Trials (ReBEC) presents the new fast tracks for clinical research and observational studies on INDIGENOUS PEOPLE AND TRADITIONAL COMMUNITIES and on NEGLECTED TROPICAL DISEASES (NTDs). Fast-track can reduce the normal approval period for clinical trials to less than 48 hours, if the documentation, information and any mandatory changes requested are provided by the registrant.

The already existing fast-tracks and the attendance to other studies will not be interrupted. Priority care is granted with a view to accelerating clinical research in epidemiological emergency situations and/or studies with the potential to reduce socioeconomic inequalities, keeping the perspective aligned with the forefront of ethics and transparency, diplomacy in health, scientific collaboration and diversity and specificities of recruitment and health care.

FAST-TRACKS IN OPERATION:

I - Indigenous Peoples, Traditional Communities, Human Migration and Refugee Movements – clinical research and observational studies dedicated to or preferably addressing traditional communities (quilombola, caiçara, faxinalense, among others), Indigenous peoples (within or outside legally demarcated territories), and refugee groups, taking into account the specificities established by regulation, on a case-by-case basis.

II - Neglected Tropical Diseases – Leprosy, Tuberculosis, Leishmaniasis, Schistosomiasis, Scabies, Chagas disease, Intestinal parasitoses, Viral hepatitis, Trachoma, Onchocerciasis, Human rabies transmitted by dogs.

III - National and International Public Health Emergencies – Mpox, Covid-19.

IV - Arboviruses – Zika, Dengue, Chikungunya, Malaria, Yellow fever.

Brazilian Healthtech company launches initiative to expand patient access to clinical trials and combat misinformation about clinical research in the country

LifeTime Clinical Research, a pioneering Brazilian healthtech company in the use of artificial intelligence to connect patients to clinical trials, is holding the "Research is Life" Movement — a series of two open events that will take place at HUB InovaHC, the largest health innovation complex in Latin America, located in Pinheiros, São Paulo.

The central purpose of these meetings is to broaden society's understanding of clinical research in Brazil and stimulate debate on the transformative role of science in public health—demystifying misconceptions that still keep patients away who could benefit from innovative treatments.

The first meeting, on April 29th, is aimed at journalists, reporters, editors, and digital health influencers. The goal is to empower communication professionals to cover the topic with accuracy and editorial responsibility, with access to specialized sources and the reality of the Brazilian clinical research ecosystem.

The date is no coincidence: the event takes place during World Immunization Week, celebrated by the WHO in the last week of April—and gains special historical significance as it happens in the same hospital complex where clinical trials of the Butantan Institute vaccines that protected millions of Brazilians were conducted.

In a new phase of the study, more than 6,000 people will be monitored in the South, Southeast, Midwest, and Northeast regions of the country.

The Butantan Institute has begun the second phase of recruiting volunteers for the clinical trial of the adjuvanted influenza vaccine in people aged 60 and over. Residents of 15 municipalities in nine Brazilian states – Bahia, Sergipe, Minas Gerais, Mato Grosso do Sul, Rio Grande do Sul, Rio Grande do Norte, Pernambuco, Espírito Santo, and São Paulo – are eligible to participate. The new vaccine has an adjuvant in its composition aimed at increasing protection against influenza in the elderly, who naturally have reduced immunity and are more susceptible to complications from the disease.

“The population aged 60 and over faces a process called immunosenescence, which causes the protective response to infections and influenza vaccines to be lower compared to the adult or adolescent population. For this reason, the Butantan Institute is developing an improved, adjuvanted influenza vaccine in order to generate greater protection and further prevent complications, hospitalizations, and deaths from the influenza virus among the elderly,” explains Carolina Barbieri, medical manager of Clinical Development at Butantan, who is responsible for the study.

Women and men aged 60 and over who are healthy or have treated comorbidities and are clinically stable can participate. Individuals with immunodeficiency or unstable diseases will not be included.

Epitopea has confirmed the Institute of Cancer Research Professor in Women’s Cancers, Susana Banerjee, as chief investigator of the OVACT trial.

pitopea has secured approval from the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) and the Regional Ethics Committee (REC) in the UK for its OVACT clinical trial application (CTA) targeting advanced high-grade serous ovarian cancer.

The first-in-human trial will evaluate the lead programme, CryptiVax-1001, a ribonucleic acid (RNA)-based immunotherapeutic vaccine.

The company has also confirmed The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust Gynaecology Unit Consultant Medical Oncologist and Research Lead, and Institute of Cancer Research Professor in Women’s Cancers Susana Banerjee as chief investigator of the OVACT trial.

Clinical trial delays often originate in early site selection decisions, where misalignment between protocol demands and site capabilities undermines startup, enrollment, and data quality despite later efforts to correct course.

Clinical trial performance is often framed as an enrollment problem. Timelines slip, targets are missed, and the focus quickly turns to recruitment strategies and patient access.

But in many cases, the real issue starts earlier. Long before the first patient is enrolled, critical decisions are being made about which sites are selected to run the study.

These decisions do not always align with the sites best positioned to execute. Across conversations with investigators, coordinators, and site leaders, a consistent pattern emerges.

Capable, experienced sites are completing feasibility, expressing interest, and then hearing nothing. At the same time, studies move forward with sites that struggle to activate, enroll, or maintain consistency.

This is not a rare occurrence, it is a structural issue in how feasibility and site selection function today. If trial outcomes are going to improve, these early decisions need closer scrutiny.

The industry spends significant time discussing patient recruitment. Yet site selection remains a relatively underexamined factor in trial performance.

Pancreatic cancer has stymied treatment advances for decades. Data from new clinical trials shows promise.

Experimental therapies with radically different approaches are stirring a wave of optimism that survival rates could substantially improve for pancreatic cancer, one of the most stubbornly lethal forms of the disease.

Giving doctors and patients more options to standard chemotherapy would “increase shots on goal” and perhaps even make the dreaded diagnosis manageable over a number of years, according to experts.

The furthest along and generating the most excitement is a pill developed by Revolution Medicines, which inhibits a protein that signals cancer cells to multiply and drives tumor formation and growth. Phase 3 clinical trial results announced this month showed patients treated with the new drug, called daraxonrasib, had median survival of 13.2 months compared to 6.7 months for people receiving chemotherapy.

The Food and Drug Administration has put the drug on its speediest track for approval, meaning it could be approved this year. Ben Sasse, the former U.S. senator from Nebraska, is taking the drug to treat his pancreatic cancer and gave an interview to the New York Times about his experience, elevating public interest.
