A group of 13 Brazilian researchers led by Francisney Pinto Nascimento, PhD in pharmacology at the Federal University of Latin American Integration (Unila), identified cognitive improvement in Alzheimer’s patients treated with low-dose cannabis extracts. The results appear in two scientific publications—a 2022 report and a randomized clinical trial published in 2025—which point to positive effects on memory, with a safety profile considered favorable.

The research line investigates the use of cannabinoids as a therapeutic alternative for improving Alzheimer’s, a neurodegenerative condition that affects millions of people worldwide and for which there is still no cure. For biomedical scientist and researcher Isabela Carvalho Freitas, affiliated with the Federal University of Goiás (UFG), the observed effects can be explained by the interaction of cannabinoids with the endocannabinoid system, which is responsible for regulating functions such as mood, sleep, appetite, and stress response.

According to the expert, modulating this system may contribute to symptom management and improved quality of life in Alzheimer’s patients, particularly regarding behavioral symptoms, which still pose significant clinical challenges.

Polylaminin, in initial trials, sparks legal debate over coverage of experimental treatments in the face of urgency and scientific uncertainty.

Reports have recently surfaced regarding a new substance, still in the testing phase, that could be used in an attempt to reverse paralysis resulting from spinal cord injury.

This substance is polylaminin, a derivative of laminin, developed through research at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) and currently funded for clinical trials. The development of this substance brings a topic in Health Law back to the center of the debate: when therapeutic hope gives rise to legal obligations for coverage before scientific consolidation. The case is emblematic because the news highlights that this is investigational technology, in the early stages of human testing, aimed at severe acute spinal cord injuries.

From a regulatory standpoint, the turning point is the transition from the experimental phase to authorized clinical research. In January 2026, Anvisa authorized a Phase 1 study to evaluate the safety of polylaminin in five patients with complete thoracic injuries. The Ministry of Health has signaled institutional interest in innovative technologies for the SUS. The POLAR Trial Proves Pancreatic Cancer Trials Were Broken by Design

Picture a trial statistician sitting across from a principal investigator in 2019, reviewing enrollment projections for a gemcitabine-based pancreatic cancer study. The PI estimates 400 patients. The statistician needs 400 patients. Nobody in that room is asking which 400. That was the problem — and the POLAR trial, published in Nature Medicine, is the most direct argument yet that “which patients” was always the question that mattered most.

The POLAR trial, sponsored by Merck and AstraZeneca, evaluated pembrolizumab combined with olaparib in patients with homologous-recombination-deficient (HRD) metastatic pancreatic cancer — a molecularly selected Phase 2 population representing one of oncology’s most hostile indications. The trial did not attempt to rescue an immunotherapy that failed in unselected pancreatic cancer. It started, by design, with only the patients whose tumor biology gave the combination a mechanistic rationale. What POLAR demonstrates — and what the field needs to hear plainly — is that decades of failed pancreatic cancer trials were not evidence that the drugs didn’t work. They were evidence that the trials enrolled the wrong patients.

That reframing is not semantic. It has direct consequences for how sponsors write protocols, how IRBs evaluate feasibility, and how the FDA should be thinking about its guidance on biomarker-driven oncology trial design.

Bringing a new drug to market can cost billions. Here’s the tally for each phase of a clinical trial—and how those costs dictate what you pay at the pharmacy.

Clinical trials are the scientific engine behind nearly every new innovative therapy for chronic conditions including autoimmune, genetic, and neurological disorders. Rigorous studies are especially important for developing treatments for rare conditions that have historically received less research attention. Without them, life-saving discoveries made in laboratories would never reach those who are diagnosed with these diseases.

Even so, conducting a clinical trial is an enormous undertaking, often requiring more than a decade to organize and running up serious sums to launch and see through, according to recent research that details how drug development can take 10 to 15 years from discovery to approval for clinical use, costing anywhere between $1 billion to $2 billion.

Many Americans only see the price of Rx drugs at the pharmacy counter. It’s tougher to gain insight into what leads up to their arrival—the research, years of preclinical testing, and finally the clinical trials themselves, which frequently yield failed experiments before approval can be gained—that make your purchase of the medication possible.

“A drug may seem cheap to make, but this does not account for the hundreds of millions spent in conducting clinical trials and all associated research,” says Katia Schlienger, M.D., Ph.D., an immuno-oncologist and the chief medical officer at Celex Oncology Innovations Inc, a biotechnology company in New York City.
