Butantan Study Shows That Dengue Serotype 3 Lineage Entered Brazil from the Caribbean and Costa Rica

The virus lineage, which caused an increase in serotype 3 cases starting in 2023, was introduced into the country in Roraima, Pará, Minas Gerais, and São Paulo.

A study by the Butantan Institute investigated the reemergence of dengue virus type 3 (DENV-3) in Brazil between 2023 and 2024 and concluded that it occurred as a result of multiple international introductions, and not through internal circulation. The research was conducted by researchers from the Center for Viral Surveillance and Serological Evaluation (CeVIVAS) and published in the journal Virus Evolution, from Oxford University in England.

In 2024, Brazil surpassed the mark of 10 million dengue cases, according to the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO). More than half of these cases (57.6%) were confirmed in the laboratory, and the spread of the disease was accompanied by a worrying statistic: 6,161 people died as a result of the infection. Among the four types of dengue virus, DENV-3 attracted attention. Although it still accounts for a small fraction of the total, the number of cases skyrocketed: there were 1,694 cases in 2024, compared to only 106 in 2023. The growth was most intense in the North and Southeast regions, where the circulation of the virus proved to be strongest, according to the Ministry of Health. After analyzing 1,536 DENV-3 genomes, the study identified the spread of lineage 3III_B.3.2, within genotype 3III, identifying at least six entry routes of this lineage into Brazil.

Unesc Conducts Pioneering Study on Cannabis and Parkinson's with Promising Results

For the past month, and without any dropouts due to side effects, a pioneering research study in Brazil has been conducted at Unesc with the objective of evaluating the effects of medicinal cannabis associated with physical exercise in people with early-stage Parkinson's disease (stages 1 to 3). The study continues until December 15th and is already showing important progress, especially regarding the safety and adherence of participants to the treatment.

The project is developed within the Parkinson's Patient Care Program (ProPark), which for years has been operating at the University offering physical and therapeutic support to people with the disease. Now, the group has also integrated the clinical study, carried out in the Experimental Physiopathology Laboratory at Unesc, in partnership with the Medicinal Plants Laboratory, and with the support of Santa Cannabis, a national association of reference in the medicinal use of the plant.

The Secretary of Science, Technology, Innovation and the Economic-Industrial Complex of Health of the Ministry of Health, Fernanda De Negri, explains what changes in the country after the regulation of the Human Research Law.

The Federal Government regulated the Human Research Law (No. 14.874/2024) at the beginning of this month. According to the Ministry of Health, the new legal framework would guarantee legal certainty, expand the protection of participants, and encourage the production of knowledge and the development of new technologies.

The measure could triple investments in Brazil, valuing the work of universities and the more than 900 Research Ethics Committees (CEPs), fundamental to ensuring the ethical integrity and transparency of studies. Between 2023 and 2024, the country registered 254 clinical studies and invested more than R$ 1.8 billion in strategic areas of health, such as vaccines, precision medicine, and oncology. With the new regulation, the Ministry expects to double this number.

New drug approvals by Health Canada are based on the results of clinical trials. But before clinical trials can go ahead, they need to be approved by ethics committees known as Research Ethics Boards (REBs).
Virtually all hospitals where research is conducted have REBs, as do universities and other institutions. The REBs are supposed to ensure that patients understand the nature of the research and have given informed consent, that the trials are conducted in an ethical way that minimizes any harm to them and that the investigators are competent to do the research.
Given the crucial role they play, it’s important that REBs are not influenced by factors like financial motives, conflicts of interest or the goals of drug companies. Without oversight, these factors may encroach on the decisions made by REBs in Canada.

REBs in Canada
All that Canada’s Food and Drug Regulations say about REBs is that they need to approve clinical trials.
The Tri-Council Policy Statement does lay out who needs to be on a REB and gives some details about how REBs should operate, but these regulations only apply to research that’s funded by the tri-council, comprising the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), the National Science and Engineering Research Council and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council.
