Cooperation foresees integration of patients into clinical studies, joint training, and expansion of research centers in strategic regions

The Minas Gerais-based medical services company Oncoclínicas&Co and the health operator Hapvida NotreDame have signed an agreement to expand their strategic partnership focused on expanding access to oncology and strengthening clinical research in Brazil. The new agreement complements the commercial partnership established between the parties in 2025, focusing on cancer treatment.

The expansion of the cooperation will allow the integration of Hapvida's oncology patients into research protocols conducted by the Minas Gerais company, creating a direct link between care and innovation.

In the first stage of the partnership, prioritization is planned for referring these patients to Oncoclínicas' clinical studies. The goal is to expand access to advanced therapies and contribute to increased recruitment in oncology research in the country.

In the second phase of the project, the collaboration takes on an even more structural dimension, with both companies advancing joint initiatives in training, scientific development, and conducting collaborative research. Furthermore, the agreement foresees the opening of new research centers in strategic locations for both organizations.

In a recent video interview with Applied Clinical Trials, Liz Beatty, co-founder and chief strategy officer at Inato, discussed how sponsors can balance efficiency pressures with patient access as competition for sites and patients intensifies. Beatty explained that while AI-driven tools are accelerating protocol design, feasibility, and trial operations, overreliance on a small pool of familiar sites can create bottlenecks that undermine those gains. She highlighted a shift away from historical site performance data toward real-time patient eligibility insights, enabling more accurate trial planning and inclusive site selection. Beatty also outlined how community research sites can remain competitive by using technology to demonstrate verified patient access and readiness. Top Journal Retracts Cancer Study After Investigation
Nature has retracted a widely cited melanoma study after investigators found data errors that rendered some results statistically insignificant, affecting “the conclusion about therapy resistance,” according to the retraction notice. Investigators also found inconsistencies in images, source data, sample numbers, and figure labeling, although no scientific misconduct was involved.

Of the 46 authors, four agreed with the retraction, 28 disagreed, and 14 did not respond. Lead author Ashani T. Weeraratna, PhD, from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, said that a 2023 replication using updated methods confirmed the original findings, but Nature did not consider these results in the retraction.

The UK has announced new clinical trial regulatory reforms to boost its appeal as a leading destination for medical research.

The UK Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) reported a 9% increase in clinical trial applications between January and November 2025 compared to the same period in 2024, with notable growth in early-stage and innovative studies.

Early phase research saw the strongest gains, with trials involving healthy volunteers rising by 16%, first-in-human studies up by 5%, and initial UK-based trials increasing by 7%. The MHRA also experienced a 75% surge in scientific advice meetings as companies sought earlier guidance to optimise trial design and minimise delays.

These increases occurred under the current framework, but significant regulatory changes are set for April. The new rules will introduce a fast-track notification route for around one in five studies, enabling quicker start times for lower-risk trials while maintaining safety standards.

The MHRA will also implement a 14-day assessment process for phase I trials, aimed at expediting early testing of new medicines.

Further updates include streamlined methods for assessing overseas safety data that meet UK requirements and enhanced capabilities to evaluate computer model simulations, such as in-silico trials. Butantan Institute Begins Clinical Study of Flu Vaccine in People Over 60 Years Old

New vaccine contains a substance in its formulation that enhances the immune response in the elderly and will be evaluated in more than 7,000 volunteers

The Butantan Institute began on Monday (January 12) the recruitment for the phase 3 clinical trial of the adjuvanted influenza vaccine, intended for the population aged 60 or older. The new vaccine has an adjuvant in its composition with the aim of increasing protection against influenza in the elderly, who naturally have reduced immunity and are more susceptible to complications from the disease.

The first stage of the clinical trial will evaluate the safety of the immunizing agent in 300 participants. Volunteers will be recruited from seven Brazilian research centers located in the states of São Paulo, Bahia, Sergipe, and Pernambuco.

Women and men aged 60 and over who are healthy or have treated and clinically stable comorbidities are eligible to participate. Individuals with immunodeficiency or unstable diseases will not be included.
