CAR-T Cell Therapy Shows an 87.5% Response Rate in Lymphoma Patients

A study using CAR-T cell therapy for the treatment of lymphoma and leukemia achieved an 87.5% response rate in patients with non-Hodgkin lymphoma who had previously undergone other unsuccessful treatments, such as chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and transplantation.

The research was conducted at the Ribeirão Preto Blood Center, in partnership with the Butantan Institute and the Ministry of Health.

The results are preliminary and were presented on Wednesday (10) by the Ministry of Health, which invested R$ 100 million in the research.

“The results are very encouraging and offer hope to patients who need this treatment. The Innovation Committee, composed of directors from Anvisa [National Health Surveillance Agency], emphasized that it will treat this product as an innovative product and, as a result, accelerate the evaluation and monitoring that are already being conducted on an ongoing basis by Anvisa’s technical team,” said Health Minister Alexandre Padilha.

The minister explained that, as the study is still ongoing, new patients will continue to be recruited, following international standards.

“Patients must be monitored for at least one year from the date of therapy administration to analyze safety and efficacy markers,” said Padilha. Since the last patient was enrolled in May, it is estimated that it will take about a year and a half to complete the analyses and potentially approve the registration.

The agency rejected requests from Pharmaceutical Research Associates Ltda for clinical trials with an experimental synthetic substance; understand the process.

Anvisa denied requests for approval (official authorization) to conduct clinical trials with the experimental drug ibutamoren mesylate (LUM-201). The decision is contained in Resolution-RE No. 2,318, published in the Federal Official Gazette (DOU) on June 9, 2026.

In practice, the denial (rejection of the request) prevents the substance from advancing to the human testing stages coordinated by Pharmaceutical Research Associates Ltda in the country. As this is an experimental drug, it is not yet available for use in pharmacies or hospitals.

Rejected research requests
The regulatory agency’s action affected two specific applications filed by the pharmaceutical company. The company’s goal was to obtain permission to begin clinical development of the synthetic drug in Brazil.

One of the denied applications pertained to the Drug Clinical Development Dossier (a document that compiles all information regarding the testing and manufacturing of a new drug). Without this technical approval, the substance cannot be used in trials with volunteers.

The second application sought approval for the clinical research process conducted by Clinical Research Organizations (CROs). These organizations are companies contracted to manage and conduct the trials on behalf of the drug’s sponsors.

Korea is expanding its role in global infectious disease research, joining international clinical trial networks led by U.S. and Singaporean institutions in a move aimed at strengthening preparedness for future pandemics and other public health threats.

The National Institute of Infectious Diseases, under the Korea National Institute of Health affiliated with the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA), said Thursday that it has established frameworks to support Korean medical institutions participating in multinational infectious disease clinical trials through partnerships with the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the National University of Singapore.

The initiative is designed to give Korean hospitals a greater role in international studies targeting emerging infectious diseases and antimicrobial-resistant bacteria, while building long-term clinical research capacity.

The institute said it first joined the NIH-supported STRIVE network in 2023 and later established cooperation with the National University of Singapore's Asia Infectious Disease Clinical Trial Network in 2024.

Through those partnerships, Korean medical institutions have gained access to international collaborative clinical studies and expanded opportunities to contribute to research addressing major public health challenges.

Brazil has been consolidating its position as one of the most strategic markets for clinical research on rare diseases. Driven by the recent regulation of the Clinical Research Law, the genetic diversity of the population, and the potential of the Unified Health System (SUS) as a source of data and future purchaser of innovative therapies, global pharmaceutical companies are expanding their investments in the country.
