    This study consists of a non-randomized clinical trial, without the participation of a control group, where patients will be screened at the Dental Clinic of the Christus University Center, where they will undergo evaluation by the research team. The selected patients will be babies between 2 months and 2 years of age, with Down Syndrome, duly registered at the Fortaleza Down Association, located in the municipality of Fortaleza. The association will refer the babies for screening at the clinic of the Christus University Center, where they will be examined and included in the study whose parents, after signing the free and informed consent form, agree and wish to treat their children with the memory palatal plate. In the dental screening, patients with Down Syndrome who have the following orofacial characteristics will be selected for treatment: hypotonia of the facial muscles, macroglossia, flaccid protruded tongue, and insufficient lip seal. It is estimated that 28 patients will be needed to participate in the study group. A care plan involving treatment with the memory palatal plate will be instituted. After the plate is installed, patients will be seen once a month, for approximately 1 year, for maintenance, as well as for evaluation of progress and follow-up on achieving improved lip seal and tongue posture and, consequently, greater control of salivary flow.

    O presente estudo consiste em um ensaio clínico não randomizado, sem participação de grupo controle, onde os pacientes serão triados na Clínica Escola de Odontologia do centro universitário Christus, onde passarão pela avaliação da equipe de pesquisadores. Os pacientes selecionados serão bebês na faixa etária entre 2 meses e 2 anos de idade, portadores da Síndrome de Down devidamente inscritos na Associação Fortaleza Down com sede no município de Fortaleza. A associação encaminhará os bebês para triagem, na clínica escola do centro universitário Christus, onde estes serão examinados e incluídos no estudo cujos pais, após a assinatura do termo de consentimento livre e esclarecido, concordarem e desejarem tratar seus filhos com a placa palatina de memória. Na triagem odontológica serão selecionados para tratamento pacientes com Síndrome de Down que possuam as seguintes características oro faciais: hipotonia da musculatura facial, macroglossia, língua flácida protruída e selamento labial insuficiente. Estima-se necessário obter 28 pacientes para participação no grupo de estudo. Será instituído um plano de cuidado envolvendo o tratamento com a placa palatina de memória. Após a instalação da placa, os pacientes serão atendidos 1 vez ao mês, por aproximadamente 1 ano, para manutenção, assim como também, avaliação de evolução e acompanhamento sobre obtenção de uma melhora no selamento labial e postura lingual e, consequentemente, maior controle do fluxo salivar.

                                                        The expected outcome of the study is to promote, early on, a greater balance in the development of orofacial structures through the correct positioning of the tongue, adequate lip seal, and consequently, the improvement of hypotonia in the facial muscles through the use of a memory palatal plate; to stimulate the normalization of basic functions of sucking, swallowing, and nasal breathing for the syndromic patient, preventing future complications. Some outcome variables may include monthly attendance for monitoring and adjustment of the plate, as well as its proper use, with the expectation that, provided there is collaboration, patients will gradually improve in lip seal, hypotonia, and the development of oro facial structures

                                                        Espera-se como desfecho do estudo, favorecer precocemente um maior equilíbrio no desenvolvimento das estruturas orofaciais através do correto posicionamento da língua, selamento labial adequado e por consequência, a melhora da condição de hipotonia da musculatura facial a partir do uso da placa palatina de memória; estimular normalização das funções básicas de sucção, deglutição e respiração nasal para o paciente sindrômico, prevenindo complicações futuras.                                                     It is expected that children under one year old will have a better outcome with the treatment, given that most of their teeth have not yet erupted.
