WCG strengthens its AI roadmap with The Contract Network, aiming to simplify site contracting and improve trial efficiency

AI-focused drug R&D services firm WCG has bought clinical trial document analysis technology developer The Contract Network.

WCG made the acquisition last week, explaining that The Contract Network’s experience using artificial intelligence (AI) for research site contracting and shortening study start-up workflows would bolster its “site enablement” offering.

In a press statement, WCG CEO Sam Srivastava said, “Study start-up continues to be one of the most challenging phases of clinical research, particularly for sites navigating contract and budget complexity.

“With The Contract Network, we accelerate the advancement of our AI roadmap by extending the capabilities we already have in place across site enablement. By bringing this specialized intelligence into our site enablement ecosystem, we can help sites and sponsors move forward with greater clarity and confidence.”

The Contract Network’s AI technology is designed to find inconsistencies in study documents, with the idea being to help sponsors and CROs identify potential issues faster than traditional systems, according to the company.

As CEO Jim Wagner put it, The Contract Network’s aim is to develop “a more connected and intelligent foundation for how sites engage across the clinical research ecosystem.”

Putting the AI in trials

The acquisition—financial terms of which were not disclosed—is aligned with comments WCG made about using AI to streamline clinical trial processes in a report earlier this year.

At the time, WCG predicted, “2026 will mark a convergence: sophisticated AI/ML tools blended with human oversight, integrated into every phase of the trial lifecycle, from design to endpoint analysis. 

“For sponsors, CROs, sites, and regulators, understanding how to harness and govern AI/ML responsibly will not just determine efficiency gains but also shape the future of ethical, high-quality clinical research.”

Buying The Contract Network also fits with WCG’s January launch of ClinSphere Trial IntelX, an AI-based platform that supports predictive trial design, site feasibility, and enrollment intelligence.
