Clinical research shows that a daily dose of the medication orforglypron may aid daily weight loss and lower blood sugar levels. The study was conducted over a 9-month period with 559 obese people with type 2 diabetes from the United States, China, India, Japan and Mexico.
The research results show:

• Weight loss: 4.5% with the 3 mg tablet, 5.8% with the 12 mg tablet and 7.6% with the 36 mg tablet. People lost an average of 7.3 kg (16 lbs.) taking one 36 mg tablet of orforglypron per day
• Blood sugar reduction of 1.2% to 1.5% with the 3 mg, 12 mg or 36 mg tablet per day
The discovery could be used to combat obesity and diabetes. Orforglipron is a GLP-1 agonist drug used in successful weight-loss injections such as Ozempic and Wegovy.

Eli Lilly CEO David Ricks said: "As a convenient once-daily tablet, orforglipron could be a new option and, if approved, could be easily manufactured and rolled out on a large scale for use by people around the world." (The Guardian).

Even though Ozempic injections are popular, the daily tablet version could allow more people to control their weight and blood sugar levels. The study results will be presented at a meeting of the American Diabetes Association in June, ahead of publication in a peer-reviewed journal. The company said it will apply for approval to market the drug for weight control later this year and for type 2 diabetes next year.
Naveed Sattar, professor of cardiometabolic medicine at the University of Glasgow, said: “These are important results. Having new oral agents that not only lower glucose but also significantly reduce weight, well beyond the levels seen with most existing diabetes therapies, is crucial for the future treatment of type 2 diabetes. Of course, one caveat is that we do not know the effects of this new therapy on cardiovascular outcomes, but this will be revealed in clinical trials.” (The Guardian).
