Ozempic: Anvisa Expands Use of Semaglutide to Reduce Risk of Heart Attack and Stroke

The authorization is based on clinical studies that demonstrated a reduction in the occurrence of heart attacks and strokes in patients who used the medication.

The National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa) authorized, this Monday (2), the expansion of the use of semaglutide (a substance present in Ozempic and Wegovy) in Brazil. From now on, the medication will also be indicated for reducing the risk of cardiovascular events, such as heart attack and stroke, in adults with heart disease who are obese or overweight.

Initially developed for the treatment of type 2 diabetes, the substance gained notoriety for its effect on appetite control and weight loss, by mimicking a hormone responsible for regulating blood glucose and the feeling of satiety.

With Anvisa's decision, Wegovy is now officially indicated as a strategy to reduce the risk of cardiovascular complications. The authorization is based on clinical studies that demonstrated a reduction in the occurrence of heart attacks and strokes in patients who used the medication combined with lifestyle changes, such as a balanced diet and regular physical activity.

Ozempic, which was already approved for the control of type 2 diabetes, also had its package insert updated to include patients with chronic kidney disease. According to studies analyzed by the regulatory agency, the use of the medication, in conjunction with standard treatment for kidney disease, helped to slow the progression of kidney failure and reduce serious heart-related complications.

The decision by Anvisa (Brazilian Health Regulatory Agency) is based on large-scale clinical studies that evaluated the effects of semaglutide in people with a history of cardiovascular disease. The results indicated a significant decrease in events such as heart attack and stroke, including among obese patients who do not have a diagnosis of diabetes.
