Umbrella research excerpt "Evaluation of physical growth, body composition, and neuropsychomotor development of patients with Gastroschisis over the first two years of life: cohort study", with 44 families of children born with simple or complex gastroschisis, up to four months of age, who attended the Gastroschisis Follow-up Outpatient Clinic of the Fernandes Figueira Institute, from August 2023 to December 2024. This is a descriptive, observational, cross-sectional, and prospective study with the objective of describing the home environment of these children. Data related to the child's characteristics, surgical characteristics, data related to home care, and socioeconomic data were collected from medical records. The home environment was assessed using the Affordances in the Home Environment for Motor Development - Infant Scale instrument, and the qualitative description of the environmental factors was presented using the proposal of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health, discussing the characteristics that can be analyzed as possible facilitators and barriers to development.

Estudo descritivo, observacional, transversal e prospectivo com o objetivo de descrever o ambiente domiciliar dessas crianças. Foram coletados dados de prontuário relacionados à características da criança, características cirúrgicas, dados referentes ao cuidado no domicílio e dados socioeconômicos. O ambiente domiciliar foi avaliado com a aplicação do instrumento Affordances in the Home Environment for Motor Development – Infant Scale e a descrição qualitativa dos fatores ambientais foi apresentada pela proposta da Classificação Internacional de Funcionalidade, Incapacidade e Saúde, discutido acerca das características que podem ser analisadas como possíveis facilitadores e barreiras para o desenvolvimento.

Regarding the characteristics of residence and home care, 84% lived in a house, 66% for more than 12 months, 64% had 2 adults living together, 53% had 1 child living together and 43% had 1 bedroom. The mother was the main caregiver for 94% and 29% of the children spent most of the time in her lap. Regarding the socioeconomic and educational characteristics, it was observed that 55% of the sample had a family income of up to one minimum wage. For 73% of the families, the mother was not employed at the time of the assessment and for 82% the father was employed at the time of the assessment. The maternal education level was prevalent for complete elementary school, with 45%, and the prevalent paternal education level was complete high school, with 41%. Regarding the environmental factors assessed by the AHEMD-IS, it was observed that 48% of the sample had a total score characterized as moderately adequate. Environmental factors considered less than adequate were more visible in gross and fine motor toys, with 39% and 78% respectively.

Gastroschisis is a congenital malformation defined by a defect in the closure of the abdominal wall, usually to the right of the umbilical cord. Child development involves the interaction of environmental, biological, and social aspects. The home environment may present environmental factors that facilitate or hinder development. The objective is to describe the home environment of children born with gastroschisis followed up at a referral hospital. This is a descriptive, observational, cross-sectional, and prospective study using primary and secondary data from research approved by the Research Ethics Committee, opinion 5,525,424, on the environment of children born with simple or complex gastroschisis up to four months of age followed from August 2023 to January 2025. Environmental factors were evaluated by AHEMD-IS and discussed by the ICF. A total of 44 families were analyzed, with a prevalence of female children, simple gastroschisis, and closure without sutures. Most have lived in a house for more than 12 months with 2 adults, there is 1 child living and has 1 bedroom. The mother was the main caregiver and the children remain most of the time in the arms. Most have low socioeconomic characteristics. The total AHEMD-IS score, physical space, and variety of stimulation were moderately adequate, and coarse and fine motor toys were less than adequate. The facilitators observed were having 2 adults or more and the presence and help of the father, and the barriers were most of the time on the lap and the little supply of toys. Residences with appropriate toys and physical space are stimulating for motor and cognitive development, the child can increase his motor repertoire and improve his functional skills, and excessive time on the lap makes this process difficult. It is important that adequate guidance be given to families, encouraging the offer of opportunities and stimulation at home. By knowing the characteristics of the home environment, it is possible to determine the impact of environmental factors on the child's functionality and, thus, enhance the facilitators and reduce the barriers to their motor development.

O desenvolvimento infantil envolve a interação de aspectos ambientais, biológicos e sociais. O ambiente domiciliar pode apresentar fatores ambientais facilitadores ou barreiras para o desenvolvimento. O objetivo é descrever o ambiente domiciliar de crianças nascidas com gastrosquise acompanhadas em um hospital de referência. Estudo descritivo, observacional, transversal e prospectivo, utiliza dados primários e secundários de pesquisa aprovada pelo Comitê de Ética em Pesquisa, parecer 5.525.424, sobre o ambiente de crianças nascidas com gastrosquise simples ou complexa de até quatro meses de idade acompanhadas de agosto de 2023 a janeiro de 2025. Os fatores ambientais foram avaliados pelo AHEMD-IS e discutidos pela CIF. Foram analisadas 44 famílias, prevaleceu crianças do gênero feminino, gastrosquise simples e o fechamento sem sutura. A maioria reside em uma casa, há mais de 12 meses, com 2 adultos, há 1 criança residindo e tem 1 quarto de dormir. A mãe foi a principal cuidadora e as crianças permanecem a maior parte do tempo no colo. A maioria tem baixas características socioeconômicas. A pontuação total do AHEMD-IS, o espaço físico e a variedade de estimulação foram moderadamente adequados, os brinquedos de motricidade grossa e fina foram menos que adequados. Os facilitadores observados foram ter 2 adultos ou mais e a presença e ajuda paterna, e as barreiras foram a maior parte do tempo no colo e a pouca oferta de brinquedos. Residências com brinquedos e espaço físico apropriados são estimulantes para o desenvolvimento motor e cognitivo, a criança pode aumentar seu repertório motor e melhorar suas habilidades funcionais, e o tempo em excesso no colo dificulta esse processo. Mostra-se importante que adequadas orientações sejam feitas às famílias incentivando a oferta de oportunidades e estimulação em domicílio. Conhecendo as características do ambiente domiciliar, é possível determinar o impacto dos fatores ambientais na funcionalidade da criança e, assim, potencializar os facilitadores e reduzir as barreiras para seu desenvolvimento motor.
