Outcome measure:
en
Knowledge regarding the communication of bad news was assessed before and after the interventions. Both groups showed significant improvement in scores following the intervention. In the control group, a statistically significant difference was observed between pre- and post-intervention scores (Wilcoxon test; p = 0.012). In the intervention group, the improvement was more pronounced, with a statistically significant difference between pre- and post-intervention scores (Wilcoxon test; p < 0.001), indicating a greater effect size associated with clinical simulation. When comparing the groups, the difference in the change score did not reach statistical significance (Mann-Whitney test; p = 0.09). However, the greater median gain observed in the intervention group suggests an additional educational benefit of clinical simulation.

Results summary:
en
Introduction: Communicating news related to illness in pediatric oncology poses a challenge for healthcare professionals, as it involves conveying information that can cause intense emotional distress, including feelings of sadness, anxiety, and loss.
Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of clinical simulation as a learning strategy for communicating difficult news in pediatric oncology among nursing students.
Design: A quasi-experimental study with a non-equivalent control group design.
Settings and participants: The study was conducted within an undergraduate nursing program at a higher education institution. Participants were nursing students enrolled in various semesters of the program, assigned to either the control group (n=31) or the intervention group (n=35) based on the educational strategy applied.
Methods: The intervention involved a clinical simulation scenario focused on communicating difficult news in pediatric oncology, which had been previously developed and validated. The control group received a theoretical lecture, while the intervention group participated in a theoretical lecture combined with clinical simulation. Both groups were assessed before and after the intervention using structured instruments. Statistical analyses were performed to compare intra-group and inter-group results using the Wilcoxon and Mann-Whitney tests.
Results: The intervention group showed a statistically significant improvement in scores following the intervention (p < 0.05), whereas the control group showed less pronounced changes over time. Although inter-group comparisons did not reveal statistically significant differences, the increase in scores was more consistent among students who underwent clinical simulation, indicating a positive effect of the intervention on communication-related outcomes.
Conclusion: Clinical simulation proved to be a relevant educational strategy for teaching how to communicate difficult news in pediatric oncology, with the potential to foster the development of communication skills during nursing education.pt-br
