  Ten subjects will be selected through clinical examination and will be divided into two groups: Group 1 (5) will first receive the prosthesis with teeth mounted with occlusal curves (Spee and Wilson curves) and Group 2 (5) will receive the prosthesis with teeth mounted with a flat occlusal plane. The volunteers will have 7 days for adaptation after installation of the prosthesis, being evaluated with tests of masticatory performance, masticatory efficiency and swallowing threshold with the prosthesis after 7 and 28 days of installation. After complete the first phase of testing, the patients will receive new prostheses and groups will be changed in relation to the assembly of posterior teeth. Patients initially in Group 1, with teeth fitted with an occlusal curve, will move to Group 2 with prostheses fitted with a flat occlusal plane. The same will happen with patients initially belonging to Group 2 who will have prostheses like those in Group 1. Both groups will have an adaptation phase and will be subjected again to the same tests with the same evaluation period. The masticatory performance and masticatory efficiency will be evaluated through the chewing of the test food Optocal, during 20, 40 and 60 chewing cycles counted and timed by the examiner. For the swallowing threshold, initially each subject will chew a portion of peanut until swallowing, followed by the chewing of a portion of Optocal which will be chewed for the same number of cycles used previously, counted and timed by the examiner. The particles will be sieved and, in this way, the value of the median particle size (X50) will be calculated for each test.

  Dez sujeitos serão selecionados através de exame clínico e serão divididos em dois grupos: Grupo 1 (5) receberá primeiro a prótese com os dentes montados com curvas oclusais (curvas de Spee e de Wilson) e Grupo 2 (5) que receberá a prótese com os dentes montados com plano oclusal plano. Os voluntários terão 7 dias para adaptação após a instalação da prótese, então serão feitos os testes de performance mastigatória, eficiência mastigatória e limiar de deglutição com as próteses após 7 e 28 dias da instalação das mesmas. Depois da primeira fase de testes concluída, os pacientes receberão novas próteses e será alterado os grupos em relação a montagem dos dentes posteriores. Os pacientes pertencentes inicialmente ao Grupo 1, com os dentes montados com curva oclusal, passarão para o Grupo 2 com próteses montadas com o plano oclusal plano. O mesmo acontecerá com os pacientes inicialmente pertencentes ao Grupo 2 que passarão a ter as próteses como as do Grupo 1. Ambos os grupos passarão pela fase de adaptação e serão submetidos novamente aos mesmos testes com o mesmo período de avaliações. A performance mastigatória e eficiência mastigatória serão avaliadas através da mastigação do material teste mastigável Optocal, durante 20, 40 e 60 ciclos mastigatórios contados e cronometrados pelo examinador. Para o limiar de deglutição, inicialmente cada voluntário irá mastigar uma porção de amendoim até a deglutição, seguida da mastigação de uma porção de Optocal a qual será mastigada pelo mesmo numero de ciclos utilizado anteriormente, contados e cronometrados pelo examinador. As partículas serão peneiradas e, desta forma, será calculado o valor do tamanho mediano de partícula triturada (X50) para cada teste.

  Totally edentulous in the upper and lower arches; age between 40 and 70 years; good general health; having alveolar ridges classified as horizontal or distal ascending in the mesio-distal direction; and normal in the buccolingual direction, with mandibular-symphysis bone height grater than 16 mm
