  Experimental group: 130 patients with Diabetes Mellitus Type 2 will receive two kinds of interventions (group or telephone intervention), during the period of 18 months. The education group (n=66) will consist of three monthly meetings per cycle and then three months interval among them. The average of the meeting group will be 90 minutes in the Basic Health Units linked to the project. Each patient will participate in 18 meeting groups during the intervention period. The telephone intervention (n=64) will consist of two calls per cycle and then three months interval among them. Each patient will receive 18 calls during the intervention period. The phone calls will be held in one of the dependencies of the Nursing School of the Federal University of Minas Gerais. Control group: 91 users with diabetes mellitus type 2 will receive only the traditional care offered by Basic Health Unit.

  Grupo Experimental: 130 usuários com diabetes mellitus tipo 2 receberão dois tipo de intervenções sendo grupo operativo ou intervenção telefônica, durante um período de 18 meses. Para o grupo operativo (n=66) serão realizados três encontros mensais por ciclo com intervalo de três meses entre eles, com duração média de 90 minutos cada encontro, sendo realizados nas próprias Unidades Básicas de Saúde vinculadas ao projeto. Cada usuários pertencente a este grupo irá participar de 18 encontros em grupos. Para a intervenção telefônica (n=64) serão realizadas duas ligações por ciclo com intervalo de três meses, com duração média de 30 minutos. As ligações telefônicas serão realizadas em uma das dependências da Faculdade de Enfermagem da Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais. Cada usuários pertencente a este grupo irá receber de 18 intervenções telefônicas. Grupo Controle: 91 usuários com diabetes mellitus tipo 2 receberão apenas os cuidados tradicionais oferecidos pela Unidade Básica de Saúde.

  Patients who are diagnosed with Diabetes mellitus type 2; both sexes; age between 30 and 80 years; with access to fixed or mobile phone line.

• Exclusion criteria:

  Patients who are diagnosed with chronic complications such as diabetic retinopathy; diabetic neuropathy; diabetic nephropathy and amputation. Patients who do not attend the call for more than five consecutive attempts.

  An improvement of metabolic control in the period of 18 months which is verified through examination of glycohemoglobin collection by finding of a 1,0% variation in the measurements before and after intervention.

  An increase of self-care practices within 18 months which is verified by applying the questionnaire of self-care in Diabetes by finding at least a score of 5 points in the measurements before and after intervention; Increased self-eficcacy within 18 months which is verified by applying the range of psychosocial autoeficacia on Diabetes by finding at least a 3.8-point score in the measurements before and after intervention; An improvement of psychological attitudes in the period of 18 months, which is verified by applying the questionnaire of attitudes on Diabetes by finding at least a score of 70 points in the measurements before and after intervention.
