  This is a cross-sectional clinical study in collaboration between the Faculty of Dentistry of Piracicaba and the Faculty of Dentistry of the University of Buenos Aires in which 36 volunteers aged between 65 and 80 years, completely toothless and in need of replacement of complete dentures, will be divided into two groups: with mild Alzheimer's Disease (AD) (experimental, 18 patients) and with normal cognitive function (control, 18 patients), and care will be taken to select 18 Brazilian elderly people (9 with and 9 without AD) and 18 Argentine volunteers (9 with and 9 without AD); in the first stage of the study, volunteers will have their old prostheses evaluated according to Vigild's criteria (1987) to be classified as satisfactory or unsatisfactory according to their conditions; Volunteers will also be subjected to the Mini Mental State Examination to correlate the values ​​with oral stereognosis (ability to understand the shape in the mouth) which will be assessed using six geometric shapes (square, rectangle, triangle, semicircle, circle and eclipse) made from raw carrots and the test will be carried out in 5 periods: (1) Before the installation of the new dentures, with the volunteer with the old dentures in their mouth; (2) Before installing the new prostheses, with the volunteers without any prostheses; (3) Immediately after insertion of the new prostheses; (4) After the adaptation period for the new prosthesis, the volunteer is free from any discomfort; (5) After 3 months of using the new prostheses, counting from the period in which the volunteer is adapted to the new prostheses (no more complaints)

  Trata-se de um estudo clínico transversal em colaboração entre a Faculdade de Odontologia de Piracicaba e a Faculdade de Odontologia da Universidade de Buenos Aires o qual 36 voluntários com idade entre 65 e 80 anos, totalmente desdentados e com necessidade de substituição de próteses totais, serão divididos em dois grupos: com Doença de Alzheimer (DA) leve (experimental,18 pacientes) e com função cognitiva normal (controle, 18 pacientes), e será tomado cuidado para selecionar 18 idosos brasileiros (sendo 9 com e 9 sem DA) e 18 voluntários argentinos (sendo 9 com e 9 sem DA); na primeira etapa do etudos os voluntários terão suas próteses antigas avaliadas segundos os critérios de Vigild (1987) para serem classificadas como satisfatórias ou insatisfatórias de acordo com suas condições; os voluntários também serão ser submetidos ao Mini Exame do Estado Mental para correlacionar os valores com a estereognose oral (habilidade de entender a forma que está na boca) que será avaliada por meio de seis formas geométricas (quadrado, retângulo, triangulo, semicírculo, círculo e eclipse) confeccionadas a partir de cenoura crua e o teste será realizado em 5 períodos: (1) Antes da instalação das novas próteses, estando o voluntário com as próteses antigas em boca; (2) Antes da instalação das novas próteses, estando os voluntários sem nenhuma prótese; (3) Imediatamente após a inserção das novas próteses; (4) Após o período de adaptação da nova prótese, estando o voluntário livre de qualquer incômodo; (5) Após 3 meses de uso das novas próteses, contado desde o período em que o voluntário esteja adaptado às novas próteses (não apresentar mais queixas)

• Inclusion criteria:

  Present good general health status or presence of controlled systemic diseases assessed during the anamnesis; be completely edentulous and have unsatisfactory complete dentures according to the Vigild criteria; be between 65 and 80 years old; and normal salivary flow of 0.6 ml/min or more. Patients in the experimental group must meet the criteria mentioned above and have a confirmed diagnosis of mild Alzheimer's disease by a neurologist using the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10); Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV); Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE); and Clinical Dementia Rating (CDR) with a score of 1.0 or less

  Participants with oral lesions; neuromuscular diseases; facial malformations; bruxism (with the presence of an edentulous tongue) and smokers (due to reduced salivary flow) will be excluded.

  It is expected to find a difference in oral sensory capacity in individuals with mild Alzheimer's disease, compared to individuals with normal cognitive function, verified through the oral stereognosis test, in which a 3-point scale will be used to classify the answers as correct (2 points), partially correct (incorrect, but a form considered similar to the one presented was identified; 1 point), and incorrect (0 points). Thus, higher scores will indicate greater oral sensory capacity of the individual.
