  The sample will be composed of 80 schoolchildren from Piracicaba Municipality (SP), with three full years, divided into two groups: experimental group, composed of 40 children with non-nutritive (pacifier) and nutritive (bottle) sucking habit, and a control group composed of 40 children without sucking habits, with normal occlusion, matched for age and gender. Both groups will be evaluated and will be followed up for a total period of 18 months, with an initial evaluation and others after 6, 12 and 18 months. The physical examination will involve the measurements of height and weight that will be obtained by means of a stadiometer and digital scale, respectively. The evaluation of the facial dimensions will be performed with the aid of a bone pachymeter and the following distances will be evaluated in millimeters: nasion-gnathion, subnasale-gnathion, zigion-zigion and gonion-gonion. The clinical examination will be performed to verify the experience of caries, anomalies of shape or number and occlusal morphology. The maximum bite force and lip pressure will be determined using a special digital gnatodynamometer for children and Iowa Oral Performance Instrument, respectively. The evaluation of the masticatory function will be performed through the instrument "Mastication Observation and Evaluation" and also by the AMIOFE - expanded protocol. Speech, deglutition and respiration functions were evaluated by the protocol "Orofacial Myofunctional Evaluation - MBGR Protocol", using a standardized methodology and recorded in video for a posterior blinded evaluation by two trained and calibrated Speech and Hearing Therapists. Food consumption will be investigated through a specific questionnaire for this age group developed by the Ministry of Health. Taste sensitivity will be determined by checking the detection threshold of sucrose and urea with methodology proposed according to age. The experimental group will be submitted to the method of clarification and positive reinforcement, which includes elucidations about the possible clinical alterations that the sucking habit could determine in the patient followed by strategies to reinforce the desired behavior (Boni et al., 2001; Degan & Puppin-Rontani, 2005). Parents or caregivers will be made aware of the importance of their integration in the context of the problem and, in order to elucidate this, photographs and study models will be used to show the possible clinical alterations that the sucking habits of pacifiers and bottle feeding can produce in children. Parents will be instructed not to interfere in the child's decision, reinforcing positively when the child presents the desired behavior, that is, the decrease in the frequency of the habits or their abandonment. The number of sessions, aimed at the orientation and awareness of the children and parents or guardians, can vary from 2 to 3 sessions. The same kind of clarification given to parents will be carried out for the child, but with the use of language appropriate for the age. Play resources (Muzulan et al., 2011) will be used as a mirror, photographs and book illustrations showing the clinical changes caused by sucking habits. Photographs of treated cases and the first frontal intrabucal photograph of the patient being treated will be shown, so that he could compare his mouth with an ideal occlusion.

  A amostra será composta por 80 escolares da rede pública do Município de Piracicaba (SP), com três anos completos, divididos em dois grupos: grupo experimental, formado por 40 crianças com hábito de sucção não nutritivo (chupeta) e nutritivo (mamadeira), e grupo controle formado por 40 crianças sem hábitos de sucção, com oclusão normal, pareadas para idade e gênero. Ambos os grupos serão avaliados e serão acompanhados por um período total de 18 meses, sendo realizada uma avaliação inicial e outras após 6, 12 e 18 meses. O exame físico envolverá as medidas de estatura e peso que serão obtidos por meio de um estadiômetro e balança digital, respectivamente. A avaliação das dimensões faciais será realizada com o auxílio de um paquímetro ósseo e as seguintes distâncias serão avaliadas em milímetros: nasion-gnathion, subnasale-gnathion, zigion-zigion e gonion-gonion . O exame clínico será realizado para verificar a experiência de cárie, anomalias de forma ou número e a morfologia oclusal. A máxima força de mordida e a pressão labial serão determinadas utilizando-se um gnatodinamômetro digital especial para crianças e Iowa Oral Performance Instrument, respectivamente. A avaliação da função mastigatória será realizada por meio do instrumento “Avaliação e Observação da Mastigação” (Mastication Observation and Evaluation) e também pelo protocolo AMIOFE – expandido. Já as funções de fala, deglutição e respiração foram avaliadas pelo protocolo “Avaliação Miofuncional Orofacial–Protocolo MBGR”, utilizando-se metodologia padronizada e registradas em vídeo para posterior avaliação cegada por duas Fonoaudiólogas treinadas e calibradas. O consumo alimentar será investigado através de um questionário específico para essa faixa etária desenvolvido pelo Ministério da Saúde. A sensibilidade gustativa será determinada por meio da verificação do limiar de detecção da sacarose e uréia com metodologia proposta de acordo com a idade. O grupo experimental será submetido ao método de esclarecimento e de reforço positivo, que consta de esclarecimentos sobre as possíveis alterações clínicas que o hábito de sucção poderia determinar no paciente seguido de estratégias de reforço do comportamento desejado (Boni et al., 2001; Degan & Puppin-Rontani, 2005). Os pais ou responsáveis serão conscientizados sobre a importância da sua integração no contexto do problema e, para elucidação deste, serão utilizadas fotografias e modelos de estudo para mostrar as possíveis alterações clínicas que os hábitos de sucção de chupeta e mamadeira podem produzir nas crianças. Os pais serão orientados a não interferirem na decisão da criança, reforçando positivamente quando esta apresentar o comportamento desejado, ou seja, a diminuição da frequência dos hábitos ou seu abandono. O número de sessões, voltadas às orientações e conscientização das crianças e pais ou responsáveis, pode variar de 2 a 3 sessões. O mesmo tipo de esclarecimento dado aos pais será realizado para a criança, porém com a utilização de uma linguagem apropriada para a idade. Serão utilizados recursos lúdicos (Muzulan et al., 2011) como espelho, fotografias e gravuras de livros que mostram as alterações clínicas provocadas por hábitos de sucção. Serão mostrados fotografias de casos tratados e a primeira fotografia intrabucal frontal do paciente que estava sendo atendido, para que ele pudesse comparar sua boca com uma oclusão ideal.
