This study employed a quantitative design to investigate the effects of Mirror Therapy on individuals with chronic stroke-induced upper limb impairments. Participants were recruited from a convenience sample of patients attending the Unilavras Physical Therapy Clinic. Ten individuals with chronic stroke sequelae were included in the final analysis. The intervention consisted of 12 sessions of Mirror Therapy, administered four times weekly for 40 minutes. Both pre- and post-intervention assessments were conducted using the modified Ashworth scale and the Fugl-Meyer assessment. Additionally, a medical history questionnaire and a mini-mental state examination were administered prior to the intervention.

According to the results found by the Fugl-Meyer Assessment (FMA), mirror therapy (MT) showed significant improvements in the following items: passive movement that increased from 167 to 196 (p=0.0138); flexor synergy in which the average was from 47 to 55 (p=0.0107); movements with and without synergy that increased from 39 to 48 (p=0.0414); hand function in which they rose from 103 to 113 (p=0.0149) and the total FMA score that also showed a significant improvement, rising from 782 to 861 (p=0.0057). Other aspects such as pain, sensitivity and importance were not significant. In contrast, the distribution of the Modified Ashworth Scale (MAS) was as follows: before MT, 10% of the participants had grade 1 spasticity, 30% grade 1+, 40% grade 2, and 20% grade 3. After MT, 20% of the participants had grade 1 spasticity, 30% grade 1+, 20% grade 2, and 30% grade 3. However, these changes were not statistically significant (p=0.05637).

Introduction. Stroke is one of the leading causes of disability, and upper limb (UL) plegia/paresis is considered the most significant. Objective. To evaluate the effects of Mirror Therapy (MT) on the motor function of the paretic UL in individuals with chronic stroke. Method. An experimental study with a quantitative approach approved by the Research Ethics Committee (CAAE: 58481922.6.0000.5116). The sample consisted of 10 individuals with unilateral hemiparesis due to stroke, who underwent assessment of spasticity using the Ashworth Scale and upper limb motor function using the Fugl-Meyer Assessment (FMA). The intervention protocol consisted of 12 MT sessions lasting 50 minutes, four times a week for three weeks. Results. The sample had a mean age of 46.2 years, and most (60%) reported a lesion time between 1 and 3 years. After MT, a significant increase in motor functions was identified in the following dimensions: passive movement (p=0.0138), flexor synergy (p=0.0107), movements with and without synergy (P=0.0414), hand function (p=0.0149), and total FMA score (p=0.0057). There was no improvement in spasticity. Conclusion. The effects of MT were beneficial in improving motor function in patients with chronic stroke.
