    This is a parallel randomized clinical trial with block randomization. The study will be considered double-blind. The researcher responsible for the clinical examinations will be blind to the intervention used. Also, the researcher responsible for the statistical analysis of the data will be blind to the intervention groups.
Interventions will take place through home visits and will consist of two groups: the control group will receive individualized guidance and will have 160 participants, the intervention group will receive individualized guidance with a teach-back method and will have 160 participants. Guidance will be provided by a previously trained examiner and will include information on oral hygiene (brushing technique, flossing technique and use of fluoride toothpaste) and diet (with emphasis on the consumption of cariogenic foods).
The evaluations will be carried out in four different moments: Phase T0 (before the intervention), Phase T1 (immediately after the intervention), Phase T2 (two months after the intervention), Phase T3 (six months after the intervention) and Phase T4 (twelve months after the intervention). Immediately after phase T3, part of the participants will receive a booster, following the randomization process and being the same guidance provided at the beginning of the study.
A clinical oral examination will be performed on children whose guardians participated in the intervention groups in Phases T0, T2, T3 and T4. The examination will be performed by a researcher blinded to the intervention used. The index of caries and visible plaque will be evaluated using the International Caries Detection and Assessment System (ICDAS) and Visible Plaque Index, respectively.
In addition, “Dr Dentuço” hygiene kits (Colgate) will be delivered to all participants in T0 (beginning of the study) and in phase T3 (6 months after the first intervention) and includes children's toothbrush, toothpaste, dental floss and an illustrative booklet.

    Trata-se de um ensaio clínico randomizado paralelo com randomização em blocos. O estudo será considerado duplo-cego. O pesquisador responsável pelos exames clínicos será cego quanto à intervenção utilizada. Também o pesquisador responsável pela análise estatística dos dados será cego quanto aos grupos de intervenção.
As intervenções ocorrerão através de visitas domiciliares e consistirão em dois grupos: o grupo controle receberá uma orientação individualizada e contará com 160 participantes, o grupo de intervenção receberá uma orientação individualizada com método de teach back e contará com 160 participantes.  As orientações serão realizadas por um examinador previamente treinado e incluirão informações sobre higiene oral (técnica de escovação, técnica do uso do fio dental e uso do dentifrício fluoretado) e alimentação (com ênfase ao consumo de alimentos cariogênicos). 
As avaliações serão realizadas em quatro momentos distintos: Fase T0 (antes da intervenção), Fase T1 (imediatamente após a intervenção), Fase T2 (dois meses após a intervenção), Fase T3 (seis meses após a intervenção) e Fase T4 (doze meses após a intervenção). Imediatamente após a fase T3, parte dos participantes receberão um reforço, seguindo o processo de aleatorização e sendo a mesma orientação fornecida no início do estudo.  
Um exame clínico bucal será realizado nas crianças cujos responsáveis participaram dos grupos de intervenção nas fases T0, T2, T3 e T4. O exame será realizado por um pesquisador cego quanto à intervenção utilizada. Será avaliado o índice de cárie e de placa visível utilizando os índices Sistema internacional de detecção e avaliação de cárie (ICDAS) e Índice de placa visível, respectivamente.
Além disso, kits de higiene “Dr Dentuço” (Colgate) serão entregues a todos os participantes no T0 (início do estudo) e na fase T3 (6 meses após a primeira intervenção) e inclui escova dental infantil, creme dental, fio dental e um livreto ilustrativo.
