  The present study will be a two-period crossover randomized clinical trial (n = 20 participants) Intervention 1) Manual brushing with neutral detergent: Brushing once a day at a fixed time for two minutes for five days using a soft brush to clean dentures associated with detergent neutral dishes without glycerin Intervention 2: Ultrasonic bath with neutral detergent solution: Immersion once a day at a fixed time for 15 minutes for five days in a solution containing 100 mL of water and one drop of neutral dishwashing detergent. The prostheses will be individually inserted into identified and capped glass pots containing 100ml of tap water, which will be subjected to ultrasonic vibration at 160 watts once daily at a fixed time for 15 minutes during five days. The total dentures will then be rinsed in running water and returned to the patient Each intervention will be conducted for five consecutive days The washout period between each intervention will be one week

  O presente estudo será do tipo clínico-randomizado, cross-over de dois períodos (n=20 participantes) Intervenção 1) Escovação manual com detergente neutro: Escovação uma vez ao dia em horário fixo por dois minutos durante cinco dias, utilizando escova macia para limpeza de próteses associada a detergente de louça neutro sem glicerina Intervenção 2) Banho de ultrassom com solução de detergente neutro: Imersão uma vez ao dia em horário fixo por 15 minutos durante cinco dias em uma solução contendo 100 mL de água e uma gota de detergente de louça neutro. As próteses serão inseridas individualmente em potes de vidro identificados e tampados contendo 100ml de água da torneira, os quais serão submetidos à vibração ultrassônica a 160 watts uma vez ao dia em horário fixo por 15 minutos durante cinco dias. Na sequência, as próteses totais serão enxaguadas em água corrente e devolvidas ao paciente Cada um dos métodos de higienização será conduzido por cinco dias consecutivos O período de washout entre cada intervenção será de uma semana

  60 years of age or older; complete edentulism; use of a conventional upper complete denture in acrylic resin for at least one year

  The wear of conventional upper fractured, repaired or relined upper dentures; being in use or having used antibiotics, antifungals or corticosteroids for a period of three months prior to the study; using denture adhesives; being a smoker; using of prostheses with excessive accumulation of calculus

  The expected outcome will be the reduction of biofilm formation in the upper denture of each participant after applying each one of the 2 interventions The outcome will be verified from the percentage variation of the estimated microbial load of the total dentures before and after the 2 hygiene interventions The method of verification of the outcome will be MTT (3- (4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl) -2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide) assay
