    Patients will be clinically evaluated by two previously trained periodontists. Of the sample, 10% will be examined twice for each of the clinical criteria evaluated in order to obtain the intra-examiner diagnostic reliability measured by Kappa statistics (between 0.8 and 1.0).
Probing depth (PD) will be measured at all sites using a Williams-type manual periodontal probe. The PD will be measured from the free gingival margin to the base of the periodontal pocket.
The clinical insertion level (CIL) will be obtained from all sites examined by measuring the distance from the enamel-cement junction (ECJ) to the gingival margin (GM) by adding to the measurement of PS. That is: CIL = PD + (ECJ to GM). All measurements obtained will be expressed in millimeters.
Gingival bleeding will be recorded dichotomously after twenty seconds of obtaining periodontal probing. Individuals' gingival condition will be assessed using the Gingival Index. Oral hygiene will be assessed using the Plaque Index.
Individuals after periodontal clinical examination will be diagnosed according to the Classification of Periodontal Diseases. Individuals diagnosed with Stage II, III, and IV Periodontitis will be included. After oral hygiene instruction of the patients, sites diagnosed with periodontal disease will be submitted to non-surgical periodontal treatment, which will consist of oral hygiene instruction, supra and subgingival scraping, root planing and dental polishing.
There will be 40 participants in the case group and 40 in the control group, dental care will occur once a week until the resolution of the acute inflammatory process, which will be defined individually by the periodontists.

    Os pacientes serão clinicamente avaliados por duas periodontistas previamente treinadas. Da amostra, 10% serão examinados duas vezes para cada um dos critérios clínicos avaliados, a fim de se obter a confiabilidade diagnóstica intra-examinador aferida pela estatística de Kappa (entre 0.8 e 1.0).
A profundidade de sondagem (PS) será aferida em todos os sítios, usando sonda periodontal manual tipo Williams. A PS será mensurada da margem gengival livre até a base da bolsa periodontal.
O nível clínico de inserção (NCI) será obtido de todos os sítios examinados por meio da medida da distância da junção esmalte-cemento (JEC) até a margem gengival (MG) somando à medida da PS. Ou seja: NCI = PS + (JEC a MG). Todas as medidas obtidas serão expressas em milímetros.
O sangramento gengival será anotado de forma dicotômica após vinte segundos da obtenção da sondagem periodontal. A condição gengival dos indivíduos será avaliada usando o Índice Gengival. A higiene bucal será avaliada pelo Índice de Placa.
Os indivíduos após o exame clínico periodontal serão diagnosticados de acordo com a Classificação das Doenças Periodontais. Serão incluídos indivíduos diagnosticados com Periodontite estádio II, III e IV. Após a instrução de higiene bucal dos pacientes, os sítios diagnosticados com doença periodontal serão submetidos ao tratamento periodontal não cirúrgico, que consistirá em instrução de higiene oral, raspagem supra e subgengival, aplainamento radicular e polimento dentário.
Serão 40 participantes no grupo caso e 40 no grupo controle, os atendimentos odontológicos ocorrerão uma vez por semana até a resolução do processo inflamatório agudo, o que será definido individualmente pelos periodontistas.
