This research was designed as a randomized clinical trial two-arm parallel. Participants will receive the Free and Informed Consent Form, and only after agreeing and signing the terms will they be included in the study. All students enrolled in the UFRJ dentistry course (n=399) will be randomized into two groups with a 1:1 ratio using a table of random numbers: control group – CG, without access to the e-book; and, experimental group – GE, with access to the e-book. Knowledge on the subject will be assessed through questionnaires at the beginning of the study and after 15 days of access to the e-books. Participants in the experimental group (GE) will have access to the e-book available at the link https://pantheon.ufrj.br/bitstream/11422/15692/3/E-bookperda-min.pdf (attached to Plataforma Brasil) with information on the topic, covering the following topics: Importance of primary teeth; etiology, classification and general consequences of early loss of primary anterior dentition; early loss of incisors (consequences and treatment); and early loss of canines (consequences and treatment). Links to access the e-book will be sent via WhatsApp/email to participants drawn to form the experimental group after having answered the knowledge questionnaire at the beginning of the study. They will have access to the content of the e-books for a period of 15 days and will receive weekly reminders to review the material sent. It is worth noting that no email or telephone contact will be made through lists in which it is possible to identify the email address/contact of other participants. This way, each shipment will contain only one sender and one recipient. The control group will only receive the link to access the e-book at the end of the research.

Despite the losses that occurred during follow-up, the groups remained without differences regarding these characteristics at the end of the study (P > 0.05). The results of the analysis were evaluated to evaluate the influence of the variables group (without access [GC] versus with access to the e-book [GE]), time (T1 versus T2), and the interaction between both (group*time) on the level of knowledge. An interaction was evidenced between the variables group and time (p = 0.023), that is, the gain in knowledge from T1 to T2 depended on whether or not you had read the e-book. Post hoc assessments identified that there was a significant increase in knowledge from T1 to T2 only in the EG. After reading the e-book, participants' scores increased 1.21 times compared to the scores obtained before reading (increase of 21%; exp β = 1.21; 95% CI: 1.11, 1.31; p = 0.002;) . This dissertation is composed of a randomized controlled clinical study (RCT) and a technical product. The RCT aimed to evaluate the effect of reading a book in digital format (e-book) published by another researcher, on the level of knowledge of undergraduate Dentistry students about the early loss of anterior deciduous teeth. For the RCT, a total of 205 undergraduate Dentistry students at UFRJ were randomized into two groups, control and experimental, according to their access (without and with) to the e-book containing information on the topic. The participant's level of knowledge was assessed using a questionnaire containing 10 questions, applied at the beginning (T1) of the study and after 15 days (T2), in both groups. Generalized mixed models were used to longitudinally evaluate the effect of reading the e-book on the level of knowledge related to the early loss of anterior deciduous teeth. The influence of the variables gender, age, and prior knowledge (having or not studied Pediatric Dentistry/Orthodontics) on the results obtained was also evaluated. One hundred thirty-six participants completed the study and were ultimately analyzed. The use of the e-book affected the level of knowledge that was time-dependent (p < 0.05). There was a significant increase in knowledge from T1 to T2 only in the experimental group. After reading the e-book, participants' scores increased 1.21 times compared to the scores obtained before reading (~21% increase; exp β = 1.21; 95% CI: 1.11, 1.31; p = 0.002). The covariate age did not influence the change in knowledge (p = 0.744). On the other hand, the covariates gender and prior knowledge showed a significant influence on knowledge change (p < 0.05). There was a significant increase in knowledge from T1 to T2 only among females (an increase of 23%; exp = 1.23; 95% CI: 1.11, 1.35; p = 0.018). Similarly, there was a significant increase in knowledge from T1 to T2 only in participants who did not have any prior knowledge (increase of 25%; exp = 1.25; 95% CI: 1.15, 1.35; p = 0.001).
