This is a two-arm, double-blind, randomized controlled clinical trial. Group 1 - Experimental: 40 nursing professionals with moderate or high stress levels will receive eight acupuncture sessions (insertion of needles in specific regions of the body) in 10 points located between the hands and elbows, and between the feet and knees, two per week. Each session will last 30 min., being approximately 5 min. for insertion of needles, 20 min. of needle retention in the stitches, and 5 min. for needle removal, patient stabilization and stretcher disinfection. The breaks between sessions will be from two to three days. Group 2 - Experimental: 40 nursing professionals with moderate or high stress levels will receive eight sessions of acutone (therapy with tuning fork), two per week. Each session will last 30 min., being 25 min. de to position and activate the tuning forks, which will remain resonant, for 2.5 min. in each of the 10 points used in Group 1, considering both sides of the body, and 5 min. for patient stabilization and litter disinfection. The breaks between sessions will be from two to three days. Group 3 - Control: 40 nursing professionals with moderate or high stress levels will not receive treatment.

Although the groups were homogeneous in terms of age, number of children, working hours, time working in the hospital and in the sector, some differences were observed: a lower mean age in the Control Group and, therefore, also in the number of children and the shortest operating time in the sector. Participants in the Acupuncture Group had an average of 80.2 months of time in the hospital, but the lowest time working in the sector, which suggests an internal turnover of professionals between sectors. Small variations in the weekly workload demonstrate an equivalent 40-hour shift between the three groups. The groups were also homogeneous for qualitative variables and in all groups there was a predominance of female professionals with a partner. In the control group, there was a higher proportion of nurses, professionals working 12-hour day shifts, with another employment relationship and with health problems. The category other from the work sector as a whole was composed of three (17.6%) from the emergency room, three (17.6%) from the Hospital Infection Control Commission, two (11.8%) from the surgical center and one (5 .9%) at the diagnostic imaging center. The PBS results show an overall mean score of 34.3 (±5.3), with 34.2 (±4.4) in the Acupuncture Group, 37 (±5.9) in the Acutone Group and 32.4 (± 5,4) in the Control Group, which are equivalent to high levels of stress at the beginning of the study.

Of the professionals, 71 answered the Google Forms® form, but one did not agree to participate in the research. Soon, 70 professionals were evaluated for eligibility. Of these, 53 professionals were excluded: 34 for not meeting the inclusion criteria (14 with normal levels and eight with low levels of stress; four using PICS; five using psychotherapy; two using PICS and psychotherapy; and one using platelet antiaggregants/anticoagulants) and 19 did not schedule appointments (loss). Thus, 17 professionals were randomized and allocated, respectively, to the Acupuncture Group (n = 5), the Acutone Group (n = 5) and the Control Group (n = 7). However, there were losses after the first session in the Acupuncture Group (n=1), Acutone Group (n=2) or the first meeting in the Control Group (n=2). Therefore, 12 professionals completed the eight sessions, but there were two more losses in the Acutone Group at the follow-up evaluation.

Deste modo, 17 profissionais foram randomizados e alocados, respectivamente, no Grupo Acupuntura (n = 5), no Grupo Acutone (n = 5) e no Grupo Controle (n = 7).

Outcome measure:
en
The results of EEP little changed after the first session. However, after the eighth session (S8after), there was a reduction in mean PBS scores in the Acupuncture Group (24.5±3.4) and in the Acutone Group (15.3±9.1), with statistical significance only for the Acutone Group in in relation to the Control Group (p=0.003). At the end of the eighth session, there was no statistical difference between the Acupuncture and Acutone Groups (p=0.371). At the follow-up evaluation, PBS scores were 25.5 (±3.7) and 23.5 (±3.5) in the Acupuncture and Acutone Groups, respectively. Data analysis using the mixed linear model showed evidence of interaction with time and group (p<0.001). The mixed linear model analysis showed evidence of group and time interaction (p=0.025 in the Bexiga meridian and p<0.001 for the other meridians), indicating different movements for the groups (Figure 3); and significant for the Acutone Group in terms of follow-up compared to the Acupuncture Group. The overall mean Qi at baseline was 47.5 µA (±15.2), with 39.4 µA (±12.5) in the Acupuncture Group, 55.6 µA (±22.9) in the Acutone Group and 47.6 µA (±7.3) in the Control Group. After the first session, the means were 28.2 µA (±12.9) in the Acupuncture Group and 34.5 µA (±12.4) in the Acutone Group. After the eighth session, the means were 29.3 µA (±8.6) in the Acupuncture Group and 36.7 µA (±22.8) in the Acutone Group. In the Control Group, after four weeks without intervention, the average was 48 µA (±15.6). At follow up, the means were 37 µA (±6.3) in the Acupuncture Group and 85.5 µA (±17.7) in the Acutone Group. In general, the groups did not show a longitudinal difference between the meridians, with the exception of a significant increase in their levels of arousal in the follow-up of the Acutone Group, being less expressive in the Kidney (p=0.094) and Bladder (p=0.052) meridians. However, considering that only two nursing professionals completed the follow-up in this group, this increase can lead to interpretation errors, being influenced by the atypical measures of one of them. With regard to the Stomach meridian, after the eighth session there was a statistically significant difference (p=0.011) in movement between the Acupuncture Group and the Control Group. The differences between the averages of the coupled meridians (which have opposite polarities, belong to the same element and connect the inside to the outside) at the beginning of the study were: P and GA = 7.9 µA; BP and E = 9.8 µA; C and ID = 1.4 µA; R and B = 0.7 µA; F and VB = 22.3 µA; and PC and TA = 4.3 µA. Therefore, the coupled meridians that presented the greatest difference between the averages were the F (55 µA) and the VB (32.7 µA), equivalent to 22.3 µA. In the intervention groups, the greatest differences between means after the first and eighth sessions (28.9 µA and 29.8 µA, respectively) were observed between the BP and E meridians. (13.9 µA) was observed between the F (54.7 µA) and VB (40.8 µA) meridians. In the Control Group, after four weeks without treatment, the greatest difference (24.6 µA) remained between the F and VB coupled. Regarding the energetic planes, the differences between the averages of the meridians involved (which have the same polarity) were: Tai Yang (ID and B) = 7.2 µA; Yang Ming (IG and E) = 5.5 µA; Shao Yang (TA and VB) = 12.4 µA; Tai Yin (Pe BP) = 7.4 µA; Jue Yin (PC and F) = 5.6 µA; and Shao Yin (C and R) = 7.9 µA. Therefore, the greatest imbalance (greatest difference between means) occurred in the Shao Yang plane, with a difference of 12.4 µA. After the first and eighth sessions and in the follow-up assessment of the intervention groups, the energy plan with the greatest difference between the means of the meridians involved was no longer Shao Yang. On the other hand, although it did not remain as the energy plane with the greatest difference between the means of the meridians involved in the Control Group, after four weeks without treatment, the greatest imbalance was observed in the Shao Yin energy plane, with a difference of 17.8 µA.

Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of acupuncture and acutone in reducing perceived stress in nursing professionals. Method: Pilot study, randomized clinical trial of non-inferiority, with three arms – acupuncture; acutone; and control – and simple (statistical) blinding, carried out with nursing professionals, in three hospitals in Santa Catarina. A protocol of eight sessions (2 per week; lasting 30 min) was used, involving five acupoints – K3, ST36, SP3, GB34, SP60 – called Shu points, which have corresponding musical notes and relationship with the endocrine system. Stress levels were measured using the Perceived Stress Scale (PBS) and Ryodoraku. Results: Seventeen professionals participated in the study. The EEP results show high levels of stress before the intervention. The mixed linear model showed evidence of interaction between groups (p<0.001) and stress reduction in the acupuncture (p=0.07) and acutone (p=0.003) groups, remaining reduced at follow-up. Ryodoraku graphs confirm evidence of interaction and some analyzes corroborate PBS scores after the intervention. Conclusion: The effects of acutone are not inferior to those of acupuncture in reducing perceived stress in nursing professionals.

Resultados: Dezessete profissionais participaram do estudo.
