The minimum sample size calculated, considering potential losses, was 13 individuals. Since the Sub-20 category met this minimum number, all athletes from this category were recruited at the time of data collection. A total of 22 athletes were assessed for eligibility, of whom 3 were excluded (2 left the club and 1 was excluded due to illness). After randomization, 19 participants were allocated to Stage 2 of the study: 10 in the Taurine group and 9 in the Placebo group. All participants received the assigned intervention. During Stage 2 follow-up, 1 participant in the Taurine group discontinued the intervention due to leaving the club, leaving 9 participants. In the Placebo group, 2 participants discontinued the intervention (1 due to injury and 1 due to leaving the club), leaving 7 participants. After a 1-week washout, the interventions were crossed, initiating Stage 3. In the Placebo group, 9 participants received the assigned intervention, and in the Taurine group, 7 participants received the assigned intervention. During Stage 3 follow-up, 1 participant in the Placebo group discontinued the intervention due to leaving the club, leaving 8 participants, while no participant in the Taurine group discontinued the intervention, with all 7 participants remaining. At the end of the study, 15 participants were included in the final analysis, 7 from the Taurine group and 8 from the Placebo group.

No grupo Placebo, 9 participantes receberam a intervenção designada, e no grupo Taurina, 7 participantes receberam a intervenção designada.

Results summary:
en
The supplementation of taurine has been tested as a potential ergogenic aid, but the results remain inconsistent, especially regarding physical performance in high-intensity intermittent sports such as football. The aim of this study was to investigate the ergogenic effects on anaerobic physical performance (repeated sprints, RSA), aerobic performance (time to exhaustion at 100% of peak velocity in the Carminatti Test, TE at PV T-CAR), blood lactate [La–], subjective effort perception (PSE), and countermovement jump (CMJ) in male professional football players. This study used a randomized, triple-blind, placebo-controlled, crossover design. Fifteen male football players were randomly assigned to receive taurine (TAU; single dose of 3 g) or placebo (PLA; single dose of 3 g) 60 minutes before testing. On Day 0 of Stage 1, participants were introduced to the project at the club and signed the Informed Consent Form (ICF) or the Assent Form. On Day 1, the athletes performed the Carminatti Test (T-CAR) to determine peak velocity (PV). Two days later, after an 8-hour fast, body composition was assessed, questionnaires were administered, and participants were randomly assigned to two groups: TAU group (3 g taurine) and PLA group (placebo). In Stage 2, participants consumed the intervention or placebo 60 minutes before the tests, followed by a standardized meal. They then performed the tests: CMJ, RSA, TE at PV-TCAR, as well as blood lactate collection and PSE assessment after the last two tests. In Stage 3, after a 7-day washout period, the treatments were switched, and the previous stage's protocol was repeated. No significant differences were found between the conditions for any of the evaluated parameters. It is concluded that acute taurine supplementation did not improve physical performance parameters when compared to placebo in male professional football players. Further studies are needed to explore and clarify the potential effects of taurine supplementation on sports performance.
