Interventions:

The present study is a randomized controlled, double-blind, 3-arm clinical trial. The intervention consisted of three 30-minute sessions at a frequency of once per week in the EG and SG. The participants in the CG were instructed to follow their normal daily routine for three weeks. The SG received three sessions of sham treatment, which consisted of gentle touching in nonspecific regions to simulate therapy without the intention to treat. For the EG, the therapist performed OVM on only one component of the viscera in each session. For such, the therapist assessed the individuals with regards to visceral dysfunctions to determine which component of the viscera would be treated. The assessment was based on the TART acronym: T – tenderness; A – asymmetry R – restriction; T – texture change. Chapman’s reflex points: Clinically used by osteopaths in the development of differential diagnoses to increase the credibility of the diagnosis, Chapman’s points resemble smooth, discretely palpable nodules located deep in the fascia in regions related by the dermatome to dysfunctional viscera. Jarricot’s reflex points: Clinically used by osteopaths, these points are zones of reflex dermalgia, generally located at the emergence of cutaneous neural branches, indicating functional disorder in the autonomic innervation of a given organ. Assessments were individual. Thus, treatment did not follow a protocol. The component of the viscera to receive OVM was that with a positive TART as well as positive Chapman and Jarricot reflex points. The randomization sequence was centralized and generated by a computer using a randomization site (http://www.randomization.com). The sequence was permutated in blocks of four to ensure equal distribution of the number of participants in the groups. Only the researcher in charge of the project had access to allocation. After screening, the names of the participants were entered into a table in Excel, sequentially numbered in a passive, consecutive manner and 20 individuals were randomized to each group (EG, SG and CG) receiving an identification number. Cards stipulating the allocation were placed in individual, opaque, sealed envelopes identified only by the number corresponding to the randomization list. The envelopes were only opened at the time of the intervention.

Objective: To investigate the effects of osteopathic visceral manipulation (OVM) on symptoms of anxiety and stress. Materials and Methods: Sixty individuals of both sexes 18 to 60 years of age with symptoms of anxiety and stress were randomized into three groups: experimental group (EG), sham group (SG) and control group (CG). The EG was submitted to three sessions of OVM. The SG received three sessions of sham treatment in nonspecific regions to simulate therapy. Each session lasted a maximum of 30 minutes. The frequency of sessions in both interventions was once per week. The participants in the CG were instructed to follow their normal daily routine for three weeks. Assessments involved the use of questionnaires (State Anxiety Inventory [SAI] and Perceived Stress Scale [PSS-14]) administered at baseline and post-intervention. Results: No significant differences among groups were found at baseline (p >0.05). In the intra-group analyses, statistically significant differences in means ± standard deviation were found in the EG: SAI of 54.7 ± 8.7 at baseline and 42.2 ± 10.7 at post-intervention (effect size of 1.29 [95% CI: 1.88 to 0.56; p = 0.0000047]); PSS-14 = 36.1 ± 5.7 at baseline and 25.8 ± 6.5 at post-intervention (effect size of 1.69 [95% CI: 2.37 to 0.83; p = 0.00000015]).
