This study is a randomized, two-arm clinical trial without masking. Randomization was performed through the RedCap platform, with supervision of the hospital statisticians. After informed consent, randomization was carried out and the patient was informed by the researcher about the designated group. The intervention consisted of the use of virtual reality glasses during blood collection at the first hospital appointment. The group that received the intervention used the glasses for distraction during collection. Both groups, control and intervention, aimed to recruit 40 participants each, totaling 80 participants, with a single collection session of approximately 30 minutes over a period of six months.

46 patients were randomized, with a mean age of 11.8 years and a standard deviation of (2.43) years, with 36 (78%) being over 10 years of age. Half of the participants were female and half were male. Regarding companions, the average age was 36.7 years with a standard deviation of 5.77 years. 92% of participants were accompanied by their mother, the other 8% were accompanied by their father, sister or aunt.

Outcome measure:
en
In the control group, 13 (56.5%) patients reported having felt pain, with an average pain intensity of 4.84 (numeric scale). In the intervention group, 14 (60.9%) reported having felt pain during the collection. The average pain experienced in this group was 4.57. However, the comparison of the two metrics did not demonstrate relevance through the T test. Regarding anxiety, in the control group there were 4 patients who were anxious before the collection and who, after the collection reported that they were no longer anxious, while in the group that received the intervention, 9 patients reported being anxious pre-collection and after collection they reported no longer being anxious. These data demonstrated statistical relevance using the McNemar test. It is important to highlight that in the control group (without glasses), 4 patients were not anxious before the collection and became anxious after the collection, while in the group that received the intervention, only 1 patient went from not anxious pre-collection to anxious after the collection. blood collection.

Results summary:

Introduction: The various ways of using virtual reality tools have become a reality in many different environments. In the context of pediatric oncology, virtual reality tools have an important role in preventing and relieving anxiety and pain, present in the various procedures to which the child or adolescent with cancer is submitted. Unlike the case of cancer in adults, where most of the reported pain is related to the tumor; in children, most of the reports of pain are related to treatment and procedures. Justification: Justified by the anxiety and pain present in the various procedures to which the child or adolescent suspected of cancer are exposed. Therefore, it is necessary to analyze means of distraction for the decrease in pain and anxiety perception by these patients and their families. OBJECTIVE: to analyze the effect of using virtual reality glasses on patients' perception of pain and anxiety before the first blood collection in the unit. Materials and Methods: This is a randomized clinical trial. The research group was selected from convenience sampling, and then randomized through a standardized platform between the control group and the intervention group. Results: Of the 46 patients collected, half were male, with an average age of 11.8 years. In the control group, 56.5% felt pain during collection, and in the intervention group 60.9% felt pain. Pre-consultation anxiety decreased statistically in the intervention group. The majority of the accompanying group intervention (95.7%) stated that the use of virtual reality glasses during blood collection brought benefits. Conclusion: The use of virtual reality glasses generated a decrease in pre-consultation anxiety despite not presenting a statistically relevant result in pain reduction. The evaluation made by the accompanying persons and patients regarding the use of the tool was, in its majority, positive.

A ansiedade pré-consulta médica diminuiu estatisticamente no grupo intervenção.
