  t is a randomized clinical trial (RCT) of parallel groups with 2 single-center arms with an allocation ratio of 1:1. The study will follow the declaration and guidelines of the Consolidated Standards of Reporting Trials and has been approved by the ethics and research committee of Uninga, Maringá. Random sequence generation was obtained using a simple table generated in Excel, with an allocation ratio of 1:1. Blinding of the allocation sequence will be done using opaque, sealed, and sequentially numbered envelopes, opened at the time of bonding the retainer. All 60 patients will be randomized and allocated to receive one type of retainer. Patients will be recruited when they are at the end of orthodontic treatment and between 14 and 50 years old. Inclusion criteria will include patients with final occlusion and satisfactory periodontal health, which will be assessed through clinical examinations; presence of all teeth including second molars and satisfactory dental alignment. The treatment protocol used during fixed orthodontic therapy will not be considered as an inclusion criterion. The total sample will consist of 60 patients divided into two experimental groups, according to the retainer received. In both groups, 2x2 retainers will be fixed on the palatal surfaces of the 4 upper anterior teeth. The groups will be divided as follows: Group 1 (multifilament retainer): Consisting of 30 patients (men and women). These patients will receive an upper fixed retainer made with Bond-a-braid® multifilament wire of 0.027" x 0.011" braided with 8 wires (Reliance Orthodontics Products). Group 2 (smooth stainless-steel retainer): Consisting of 30 patients (men and women). These patients will receive a smooth stainless-steel retainer made with 0.024” stainless-steel wires (Morelli Orthodontics; Sorocaba, São Paulo, Brazil). Both retainers will be fabricated directly in the patient's mouth on the day of appliance removal. Relapse of crowding will be evaluated with the Little's irregularity index, and periodontal parameters will be assessed through the following indices: plaque index, gingival index, probing depth, and bleeding on probing.

  Trata-se de um estudo clínico randomizado (RCT) de grupos paralelos de 2 braços de centro único com uma taxa de alocação de 1:1. O estudo seguirá declaração e as diretrizes do Consolidated Standards of Reporting Trials e foi aceito no comitê de ética e pesquisa da Uninga, Maringá. A geração de sequência aleatória foi obtida usando uma tabela simples gerada no Excel, com uma taxa de alocação de 1:1. O cegamento da sequência de alocação será feito usando envelopes opacos, selados e numerados sequencialmente, abertos no momento da colagem da contenção. Todos 60 pacientes serão randomizados e alocados para receber um tipo de contenção. Os pacientes serão recrutados quando estiverem ao fim do tratamento ortodôntico e que tenham entre 14 e 50 anos de idade. Os critétios de inclusão incluirão pacientes com oclusão final e saúde periodontal satisfatórias, que serão avaliadas através de exames clínicos; presença de todos os dentes incluindo segundo molares e alinhamento dentário satisfatório. O protocolo de tratamento utilizado durante a terapia ortodôntica fixa não será considerada como um critério de inclusão. A amostra total consistirá em 60 pacientes divididos em dois grupos experimentais, de acordo com a contenção recebida. Em ambos os grupos, as contenções 2x2 serão fixadas nas superfícies palatinas dos 4 dentes anterossuperiores. Os grupos serão divididos da seguinte forma: Grupo 1 (contenção multifilamentada): Composto por 30 pacientes (homens e mulheres). Estes pacientes receberão uma contenção fixa superior confeccionada com fio multifilamentar Bond-a-braid® de 0.027″ x 0.011″ trançado de 8 fios (Reliance Orthodontics Products). Grupo 2 (contenção lisa de aço inoxidável): Composto por 30 pacientes (homens emulheres). Estes pacientes receberão uma contenção lisa de aço inoxidável confeccionada com fios de aço inoxidável 0,024” (Morelli Ortodontia; Sorocaba, São Paulo, Brasil). Ambas as contenções serão confeccionadas diretamente na boca do paciente no dia da remoção do aparelho. A recidiva do apinhamento será avaliado com o índice de irregularidade de Little, e os parâmetros periodontais serão avaliados através dos seguintes índices: índice de placa, índice gengival, profundidade de sondagem e sangramento a sondagem.
