All patients will make three monthly visits during the project development, when they will receive education about temporomandibular disorders and self-care instructions through lecture and illustrative material printed with the procedures which should be done daily at home. The sample is randomly divided into 3 groups according to the sequence of approaches which will be allocated. At the end of 3 months duration of the experiment, all participants in the sample will receive comprehensive approach including education and self-care instructions. Groups: Education Group: in the first session only receive information / education on temporomandibular disorders. In the second session will be reassessed and given instructions for self-care. The third session they will be reassessed, and could ask questions and review the procedures taught in the previous session. Self-care Group: the first session they will receive education on temporomandibular disorders and self-care instructions. In the second and third sessions they will be reevaluated and may ask questions and review the procedures taught. Control Group: in the first session they will be only evaluated. In the second session they will receive receive education on temporomandibular disorders and self-care instructions, and in the third session they will be reevaluated and may ask any questions.

Todos os pacientes farão três visitas mensais durante o desenvolvimento do projeto, quando receberão educação sobre disfunções temporomandibulares e instruções de autocuidado através de palestras e material ilustrativo impresso com os procedimentos que devem ser feitos diariamente em casa. A amostra será dividida aleatoriamente em três grupos de acordo com a seqüência de abordagens para a qual serão alocados. No final de 3 meses de duração do experimento, todos os participantes da amostra terão recebido abordagem completa, incluindo instruções de educação e auto-cuidado. Grupos: Grupo Educação: na primeira sessão receberão apenas educação sobre as difunções temporomandibulares (o que são, estruturas envolvidas, fatores de risco, etiologia, progressão). Na segunda sessão será reavaliadas e receberão as instruções para de autocuidado. Na terceira sessão, serão reavaliadas e poderão fazer perguntas e rever os procedimentos ensinados na sessão anterior. Grupo Autocuidado: a primeira sessão eles receberão educação sobre disfunção temporomandibular e instruções de autocuidados. Na segunda e terceira sessões serão reavaliadas e poderão fazer perguntas e rever os procedimentos ensinados. Grupo controle: na primeira sessão serão apenas avaliadas. Na segunda sessão, receberão educação sobre disfunção temporomandibular e instruções de autocuidado. E na terceira sessão serão reavaliadas e poderão fazer perguntas e tirar dúvidas.

Female gender Aged between 18 and 70 years old Chronic pain related to temporomandibular disorder Do not be in treatment for this painful condition Do not be starting any treatment for any other painful condition fibromyalgia, back pain, neck pain or rheumatic changes. If a medication has been using for 3 months or more, may be included in the sample. Be able to read and write. Do not present problems in cognitive abilities or communication.

Ser do gênero feminino. Ter idade entre 18 e 70 anos. Apresentar dor crônica relacionada à DTM crônica. Não estar em tratamento para essa condição dolorosa. Não estar iniciando nenhum tratamento para qualquer outra condição dolorosa como fibromialgia, lombalgia, cervicalgia ou alterações reumatológicas. Caso já esteja usando tais medicações por 3 meses ou mais, poderão ser incluídas na amostra. Ser capaz de ler e escrever. Não apresentar alterações das capacidades cognitivas ou de comunicação.

Exclusion criteria:

Presence of acute TMD. If the individual is starting treatment for any painful condition as fibromyalgia, back pain, neck pain, or rheumatic diseases. Presence of cognitive or communication difficulties.

Primary outcomes:

Reduction of pain intensity according to visual analog scale. In all the visits, the volunteer (patient) will be asked about their grade of pain during the past 30 days. The patient will mark in a line with 100 mm of lenght, the point which represents their pain. Then we will measure with a ruler the distance between this point and the beginning of the line, thus having a numerical value for your pain.

Redução da intensidade da dor de acordo com escala visual analógica. Em todas as consultas, a voluntária participante (paciente) será questionada sobre o grau da dor que teve durante os últimos 30 dias. Para isso, a paciente irá marcar em uma reta de 100 mm de comprimento, o ponto que representa sua dor. Em seguida mediremos com uma régua a distância entre esse ponto e o início da reta, tendo assim um valor numérico para sua dor.

Secondary outcomes:

Change in the grade of mandibular function impairment. Before and after the treatment, volunteers will answer the questions of the RDC / TMD - Axis 2, Item 4. The answers to these questions provide a value ranging from 0 to 1, and the higher the value, the worse the mandibular function. So, we will compare the results at the beggining and at the end of the treatment to observe if there was improvement in mandibular functions (to speech, chewing, mouth movements in general).

Mudança no grau de dificuldade para realização das funções mandibulares. No início e no final do tratamento, as voluntárias irão responder à perguntas que compõem o RDC/TMD - Eixo 2, Item 4. As respostas à essas perguntas fornecem um valor variando de 0 a 1, sendo que quanto maior o valor, pior a função mandibular. Asim, iremos comparar os resultados do início e do final do tratamento para observarmos se houve melhora nas funções mandibulares (fala, mastigação, movimentos da boca em geral).
