  A randomized clinical trial was conducted to test the hypothesis that the use of the local delivery system (film or gel) to scaling and root planing (RAR) is superior to RAR alone. A total of 45 patients from the College of Dentistry of Ribeirão Preto - USP, of both sexes, who had at least 2 teeth with chronic periodontitis were selected, composing a total for the study of 96 teeth, randomly divided (through a computer program) in 3 groups, namely: • Group 1 - scaling and root planing (RAR) - active control - 15 individuals; • Group 2 - RAR + film with metronidazole - 15 individuals; • Group 3 - RAR + metronidazole gel - 15 individuals.

  Foi realizado um estudo clínico randomizado para testar a hipótese de que o uso associado do sistema de liberação local (filme ou gel) à raspagem e alisamento radicular (RAR) é superior à terapia RAR isolada. Foram selecionados 45 pacientes da Faculdade de Odontologia de Ribeirão Preto – USP, de ambos os sexos, os quais apresentaram ao menos 2 dentes com periodontite crônica, compondo um total para o estudo de 96 dentes, divididos aleatoriamente (por meio de programa de computador) em 3 grupos, a saber: • Grupo 1 – raspagem e alisamento radicular (RAR) – controle ativo - 15 indivíduos; • Grupo 2 – RAR + filme com metronidazol - 15 indivíduos; • Grupo 3 – RAR + gel de metronidazol - 15 indivíduos.

• Inclusion criteria:

  Chronic periodontitis with a clinical insertion level equal to or greater than 5 mm in two or more teeth and depth of probing equal to or greater than 5 mm in one or more periodontal sites (MACHTEI et al., 1992); age range from 35 to 70 years; not have used antibiotics for at least 3 months; absence of history of allergy to the components present in the formulations tested.

  Voluntários com periodontite crônica, com nível de inserção clínica igual ou maior que 5mm em dois ou mais dentes e profundidade de sondagem igual ou maior que 5mm em um ou mais sítios periodontais (MACHTEI et al., 1992); faixa etária de 35 a 70 anos; não ter feito uso de antibióticos há pelo menos 3 meses; ausência de histórico de alergia aos componentes presentes nas formulações testadas.
