This is a randomized, controlled, single-blind clinical trial. The groups will be drawn by opaque envelopes after the first intervention, being divided into a control group and an intervention group. Control group: 20 women with Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome will receive an elastic bandage application on the limb with the highest level of pain and will be followed for 6 weeks, receiving a weekly application of the bandage with the same length (without tension). The intervention group will consist of 20 women also with Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome and will receive the application of bandages weekly for 6 weeks, but with an increase in tension of 5% of the initial length of the bandage (percentage to be removed from the bandage each week). Both groups will be evaluated in weight, height, body mass index, visual analogue scale (pain), evaluation of muscle performance through surface electromyography associated with maximum voluntary contraction test (strength) and functional tests of going up and down steps, sit and stand up using the tests performed in the initial week, after 3 weeks and after 6 weeks.

Outcome found 1: Our results suggest that elastic bandages are effective in reducing pain in women with PFPS both when applied with tension and without tension, with better results for progressive tensioning, which in addition to greater pain reduction also improved the participants' functionality , having no influence on muscle activations during tasks. In this way, the application of bandages proved to be effective and an ally in the treatment of PFPS.

Introduction: The knee is a joint with a high rate of injuries and pathologies, among wich the patellofemoral pain syndrome(PFPS) stands out, the PFPS is characterized by pain in the anterior retropatellar and/or peripatellar region, worsening by overloads such as going up, down stairs, jumping and squating, beig more commom in women. Objective: To analyze the effect of Therapy Tex elastic taping in a protocol with and without tension on pain, functionality and muscle performance in women with PFPS . Method: This is a randomized clinical trial with 21 women aged 28 (±5) years, weight 70.4 (±13.8) kilograms (Kg), height 164.3 (±6.9) centimeters (cm) , body mass index (BMI) 26.1 (±5.28), in which they participated and were randomized into two groups: no tension group (NTG) (n=10), and tension group (TG) (n=11 ). All answered the Anterior Knee Pain Scale (AKPS) questionnaire, reported the highest level of pain through the visual analogue pain scale (VAS), and performed the functional tasks of: Climbing a step, sitting and standing and the maximum voluntary contraction test (MVC) for acquisition of the Root Mean Square (RMS) of the vastus medialis obliquus (VMO), vastus lateralis (VLL) muscles through surface electromyography (EMG) and force in kilograms force (Kgf) in the MVC. The tests were performed in the first week, after 3 and 6 weeks, and the taping was applied weekly for 5 weeks with a 5% tension adjustment each week for the TG. Results: The groups were considered homogeneous for anthropometric characteristics with no statistical difference for the groups (p>0.05). There was a significant interaction for the independent variables time and group for pain intensity (p<0.001) according to the Two way mixed Anova, with no difference between the groups at the pre and 3 weeks time, the NTG improved 4 points on the VAS (p< 0.001) between the pre and 6 weeks, the TG obtained an improvement of 6.91 points (p<0.001) in this same comparison. There was a difference between groups at 6 weeks with the TG 2.4 points better compared to the NTG (p<0.05). For the AKPS there was an improvement of 12.56% for the TG from pre to 6 weeks (p<0.05) with a significant difference between NTG and TG at 6 weeks, with TG being 13% higher than GST (p<0, 05). For strength in Kgf of CVM and muscle electrical activity, no significant interactions were found between groups and evaluation times. Conclusion: Progressive tensioning has shown to be superior to the application without tension of the elastic bandage in controlling pain and improving functionality, with no effects on muscle perfomance in women with PFPS.
